D1 4.0 swap into a D2
Has anybody tried to put a 4.0 D1 engine into a 4.0 D2. I am in the process of doing it, I have swapped the front cover, cam tone wheel, oil pan etc. the problem I am having is the crankshaft sensor. The mounting plate for it is aluminium, welded into the rear of the block and they are in slightly different places. The tone wheel on the D2 flywheel is machined into the front, where as the D1 has a steel strip riveted on. When the D2 is at TDC #1 the missing teeth on the tone wheel are at the crank sensor, on the D1, they are 90 degrees advanced, what I have done is use the D1 flywheel, but drilled a hole for the dowel on the crank, so that on TDC the missing teeth are opposite the crank sensor. I have used the D2 sensor, but had to shim it out slightly to give an air gap. I have installed the engine quickly, essentials only. I am getting no spark, no rpm on the tach. Can anybody help. I am considering pulling the engine, grinding out the crank sensor mount and welding in a new one to accept the D2 sensor and flywheel.

What did you do about the camshaft sensor on the front of the engine?
I am not sure but as long as your crank sensor is in the correct location and reading the disco 1 flywheel sensor track it should be ok. The firing order is the same so you should be getting something.
Maybe the camshaft position is not correct.

I pulled the motor, removed the D1 crank sensor mount, welded in the D2 mount, fitted the D2 flywheel & re-installed the motor, flashed right up.
