78 series 3 109

#1 Post by dixono » Mon Nov 17, 2014 9:53 pm

this truck is new to me. so is there supposed to be oil in the bottom of the air filter? if so is it just normal oil? also when the engine is idling there is a little orange light that comes on that is to the left of my steering wheel. does anyone know what it is for? and what kind of oil does the engine take?

Download the manuals here: http://www.landroverweb.com/landrover/p ... r-manuals/ and have a read.

The oil filter is an oil bath filter. It uses engine oil. You can have a look at the manual for oil grade recommendations.

Which light specifically?

Manual says that whatever is in the engine is the same spec for the air cleaner. 15/50 is the spec in the manual.

I'm pretty sure it really doesn't matter what type of oil is in the air cleaner as long as it has oil in it and it hasn't turned completely to sludge.

Just be careful about not overfilling it. There should be an embossed line in the bottom section...that is your fill level.

the light would be #5 but mine is orange. like I said it just started to come on when idling then when the revs go up it goes away. also ive notice since this started to happen it is a lot louder at idle. I am thinking it must be a oil pump sensor light or something?
and I have filled the air cleaner up to the line you are talking about.
so 15/50 is what the engine takes? I have 10/30 in it right now.. is that a bad thing?

thanks for the help guys

Not for our climate. 10W/40 is probably the best on the chart. If you are not planning on super cold starts than a 15W40 diesel oil would be a good choice.

#5 is shown as a spare light in the manual. It is not the oil pressure light. That is on the speedo and labelled. It could be anything, you will need to trace it.

Hello,
#5 light is low fuel. Put some in and see if it goes away.

ok I tested out the fuel theory. my truck defently has plenty gas in both tanks... it seems like the light turns off once the truck is more well heated up. so maybe it is like a..... cold engine light?

it turns out that the light is a voltage regulator light. the reg stoped working and the light came on solidly and constantly when the engine was running. fixed the reg and now the light just comes on when the engine is idling low

Maybe not for YOUR climate
On Van Isle 15/50 or 20/50 is a good choice
