overdrives, transmissions and coolers?

Dear all,
I just picked up a rebuilt fairey OD for my '63 4 cycl 109. I've been reading that they share the same fluid as the tratransmission and that's part of the wear/burn out factor. Has anyone got any input on if a separate transmission cooler would help?

My thoughts are:
More fuild/less wear
cooler fluid = happy tranny

Ideas?

The trouble with a separate oil cooler is that you would need a pump to circulate the oil. Ninety weight oil doesn't pump so well!

Rocky Mountain has a bolt on cooler that is a ribbed bottom plate. An improvement over the original as it solves some leakage problems from getting that cover to seal. I'm not sure if it adds any volume though. The only problem with the OD sharing the t'case oil is the leakage from the t'case reducing the amount of oil to lubricate the OD. Solve the leaks and you have no problem.

The fairey has its own oil supply so anything on the transfer case or transmission doesn't affect it. There is no way to increase the sump on the fairey without major surgery.

One of the issues with the fairy is that the amount of oil in it is quite small so if you have a leak you can lose all the oil pretty quick, usually into the transfer case. Other issue is the breather is just a hole in the top cover with a split pin in it, meaning if you drive for a long time with the OD engaged, the oil will get hot and slowly spit out the breather, losing your oil even without a leak. The answer to that is drill out the hole and tap it for a brass barb, then run a hose somewhere higher, that way it can still breathe but you won't lose the oil.

Also, check the oil often, like before any long trip and every other fill up.
