Just a quick warning not to use Fed Ex for shipping from England. I got charged $39 extra for duty & taxes on my 68 pound order and this was on top of the shipping charges. I have never had to pay extra before. The package did arrive in 4 days which was amazing but I wish I knew about the extra charges ahead of time.

use royal post... gets transfered to canada post and half the time you dont even have to pay duty let alone brokerage fees

FedEx? Really. Their brokerage fee should be a flat $10. If you have an account, they waive the fee. UPS has a floating brokerage fee which is quite high.

They should be charging GST and duty (if applicable), but that has nothing top do with them. If you feel they used the wrong duty code, you can complain and get it correct assuming you are correct. It should normally be 5% tax plus 6 to 8% duty (for car parts), although you can get zero duty if you list it as an antique vehicle part with the correct code.

If your car parts are for a vehicle more than 25 years old, you can get zero duty and if you get charged, go back and quote this section. Best to have it listed on the waybill in advance.

UPS phoned and asked me if I wanted to use them as a Broker, they said it would be $38. I said no thank you, so I went to the their airport location picked up the paperwork and over to Customs on Miller Road. I used the >25 year exception, paid the GST and PST and within 10 mins was back at UPS, easy peasy.

So do any of you ever ask the courier companies if there is another alternative?

They often go ahead without asking. Then try to get your money back. Not easy.

Hi Guys

The only way to ship from England or the USA is by mail Period. If you use a courier any courier you will pay extra. It has been like this for the 30 years I have been ordering parts for old cars. Always get the company you are buying parts from to write on the bill and package( parts for a vehicle 25 years old.) (If it is).
Any way thats my opinion.

Like I said above, you can ship by FedEx and only get charges GST/PST. You need to sign up for an account (can do online) and have it billed to your account. There should be no brokerage fee and no duty.

- Tell them it is for personal use only.
- Tell them the parts are for a 25+ year old vehicle.

If you do get charged for duty or any "other" fees then complain and you will get them back. We have parts coming in regularly from England. They are not consistent and you need to keep on top of them.

Mail works well too, but expect 3 weeks and no tracking. For small items it is cheap, but gets expensive as the package size grows. Higher priced items will get a small brokerage fees, duty and tax.
