Quick Question

I have the original springs and struts off a 1997 Land Rover Defender 110 sitting in my garage. The items look fine but came off the truck when it had 320k. Are these worth selling or metal scrap yard? Thanks

I would say the shocks are probably toast! When you compress them by hand do they have good resistance and then slowly open up again on their own?

The Springs are most likely usable, knowing your truck they were probably heavy duty so they still have some life. I would suggest putting them up in the for-sale section and see if you get any takers. Keep in mind they are only around $120 to $200 new for a pair. (depending on make).

Do you know the brand? LR or after market? Colour - Black or Yellow?

Thanks Andy, I appreciate the feedback.

The springs are black and I believe them to be LR Genuine but there's no marking that I can find, but they look heavy duty and fine.

I'll post an add later tonight with couple pics.

On the springs, you can measure the length to see if they have sagged. It is hard to get any money for them in my experience. Shocks are good for emergency trail repairs if they are still good and you off road. They won't expand on their own as they should not be gas charged.

I second this. When I've done long trail trips (Thailand, Baja, etc) I've taken spare shocks (used but still serviceable) and wired them to the bottom of the truck next to the frame rails, so they are out of sight, out of mind, until you need them. Make sure it's easy to see it's just a shock, (ie: don't wrap them in a plastic bag) otherwise you might get a shock when you cross a border...
