Re: Price of a defender STUPID!
Yep. CRAZY!
What I don't understand, if you REALLY want a Defender, and can afford it, a NEW Defender SW 110 XS (the top spec) costs 25260 pounds according to JLR's UK website. That's just under $47000 CDN.
So...VIN from old wreck, new galvanized chassis, body swap, shipping & paperwork: $60K tops. And then you have a NEW car, not an old one! (One hopes JLR have made some improvements over the last two decades.) For the asking price, once could also get a brand new Range Rover Sport, or one of the last L322 Range Rovers and a vast amount of kit. The mind boggles as to how you could kit out an LR3/4 with that budget.
Defenders are GREAT. But that's just silly. It may eventually happen once production ceases and they become rare, but, when one considers the number of series Land Rovers still running, that's going to take some time.

who is going to pay this much for a Defender ? - Justin Bieber without a mortgage . being serious here , sure is a pretty Rodeo Drive boulevard cruiser .
a crazy price indeed for a vehicle that lacks the character compared to my 1986 exmod 90 with the odd leak , noisy interior and diesel smoke out driving around PG on it's crappy sanded & pot-holed roads . :spinning:

In Defence of "Stupid"
In defence of "stupid", a new ford diesel pick-up is $87,000 plus taxes. What may seem stupid to one person may be perfectly acceptable to another.
Each Land Rover has it's own personality, I have owned Range Rovers and loved them except for the cost of maintaining them. But I am a confirmed Series and Defender fanatic today.
A ROW spec Defender in many peoples minds is the pinnacle Defender. Non-electronic diesel engine and pretty much can be fixed anywhere in the world should that become necessary, which would be rare. They were built for military service in foreign soil. Since Land Rover started using electronic diesels the Defender started a slow death which will end next year.
It has nothing to do with what a new one costs, because a new one isn't what a Defender is all about, it's a combination of two incompatible ideals, dependability and electronics.
So if you want "the best of the best" what is a reasonable price? It's a supply and demand issue, they are getting harder and harder to source so it you really want one $85,000 will seem like a bargain in a few years. In 2006 when Land Rover released their surplus ROW inventory you could pick one up brand new for about $16,000. The next year if you could find one the price had doubled.
If it's the economics you think is stupid, in five years time which will be worth more, a Ford Diesel Pick-up or a ROW Defender? Now who's "stupid", I guess I am because I own one along with a few Series I's, II's and IIa's. They are like children, each a little different but I love them all.
As a famous Englishman wrote in a play...

On a final note, members who can't attach their name to their posts are hard to take seriously... :bounce:

Re: Price of a defender STUPID!
And who's paying 87k for a ford diesel pickup lol what a waste of money. My brother spend 40k on a full size diesel 2012 Ram loaded to the tits with barely over 20km on it.
Don't tell me Sturat that you would spend that kind of money on a denfeder either. For close to 100k you could ship 4-5 defenders over here.
Anywhoo just thought the prices are getting ridiculous, thats all no one has to agree with me on this either.

What do you mean about unsigned posts? I do not understand.StuartL wrote:

Re: In Defence of "Stupid"
Yeah, I’ve seen some very expensive American pick-up trucks and they are no more sensibly priced than this Defender. Stupid + Stupid does NOT equal Smart! That Defender ad has been around a while, so the car’s price isn’t where ‘demand’ is at the moment.StuartL wrote:In defence of "stupid", a new ford diesel pick-up is $87,000 plus taxes. In Defence of STUPID!
A very successful classic car dealer told me that you can never pay too much for a good classic car (or a Land Rover) you just may have bought it too soon.
At $85,000 it is perhaps too much to pay when there are others currently available for less. Right now the "I can't believe it's not sold" deal is in Calgary. A Stuart Foley ROW for $43,000 it should be sold!!!!

Re: Price of a defender STUPID!
Yes, much more attractively priced. :D If as described, that's a nice one.
Also, exactly 1/2 the price of the one Franko found.

I don't really think there is much market for these expensive cars, even the Calgary one. You can import a nice stock TD5 a lot cheaper.

Re: Price of a defender STUPID!
Craig, your math is off, I don't want a new UK spec truck and your plan is unworkable.
Franko, new 80k+ American pick-ups sell like crazy here, your brother got ripped on his used Dodge.
John, I don't want a "nice stock TD5"
Soeren, I've been waiting for the economic apocalypse to bring cheap Land-Rover prices for too long already.
Stuart, I agree with you 100%
Just my opinion, Some offense intended. :bounce:

Re: Price of a defender...STUPID!
Mmmmm Defenders.....
If you think they are expensive here... Cross the line.
The only thing better than a defender is two defenders.

Re: Price of a defender STUPID!
Just keep in mind that "asking price" means nothing. Selling price is all that matters. From what I have seen Defenders are not selling lately for high prices in Canada. Even reasonably priced ones sit on the market for a very long time. By reasonably priced, I mean the price to buy one and import it yourself plus an acceptable markup.

Hey Craig, agreed re the campfire talk, you'll need to take up drinking though. :drunken:
John, I agree, asking price is not selling price. Don't be afraid to make an offer :wav:

looking forward to meet you soon to discuss the falling prices of Defenders - hang around and all the rich want to be cool guys will sell them for some Kraft Dinner ...i have been around Rover Landers since the early 1990 (very low profile ask Andre LOL) and have seen lots of crazy prices since... as anything else once some guys have to much money and just dreams (......) prices get stupid... they come and go as the toys they like to collect..... you have to be somewhat nutz to be a Land Rover lover to put up with it all .... and yes i had more then 50 + Rovers insured in my name..... Incl Santanas and Minervas and one Tempo from my home town in Hamburg. If you have money you can justify anything if you want....a Land Rover is a very simple basic Truck/Vehicle 4x4 etc ( As they like to advertise from the factory) and anyone can build one with an imported 15 year old vehicle from Europe for a lot less money to new.....i love them and will never abel to get them out of my life .... but stupid is stupid and stupid has a lot to do with money .... just my 2 cents
