Thanksgiving Monday Island Drive

#1 Post by island dormy » Thu Oct 03, 2013 7:28 pm

Hello everyone

It looks like we are going for our annual fall drive somewhere in the hills west of Duncan on Thanksgiving Monday the 14th of October. Meet at Tim Horton's just North of Duncan (across from the BC forest museum) not sure yet where we are going, details will follow as we know more next week.
Departure time will be 9:00am SHARP. Bring the usual supplies, lunch, full tank of petrol, lawn chairs, radios (Ham, CB, Hand held family radios).
We will try to be back on pavement by 4:00 pm in order to get everyone home in time to partake in the holiday ritual of feasting on roast bird.

I am only posting the details of the coming drive and any changes on this site so if you know of any rover driver who wishes to come along please refer them to this posting. ( I know the Vancouver island rover group uses face book, used Victoria, the Van Isla land rover network and the Yahoo Van Isle rover network to communicate on) It would be a shame if any one misses out on the drive on Thanksgiving Monday.

Really hoping to make this! I still haven't got that cable I ordered off eBay like a month ago... if I don't have it on time to diagnose my issue I guess the old girl will still be coughing and wheezing around rather than running nicely.

Count me in! I'll be there with the 130... the "plushmobile" Disco has a "headache" so the Defender gets to go out and play!

Hi Rob

So far it looks like you and I, Greg S, Dave F, Strange Rover, Matt M?, and hope fully a bunch more.
Meeting place is still the same with a 9:00 am Sharp departure time (come earlier for Coffee?) we are planning to head out Lake Cowichan way. This should be a easy day out in the woods back in time for dinner. See you Monday.

Great day out today. Two series rovers, a 130 dump truck rover , a 90 army rover, a immaculate 90 hard top, a first generation range rover, a Disco and a j*%P. Beautiful fall weather, a really nice lake front lunch spot it was spectacular. We did not make it all the way up to the old Green Mountain ski hill as we just ran out of time. However we now know another way to get up there although it adds 1 and a 1/2 hours to the trip.
Maybe next year we will try again.
Hey Matt we did wait for you till 9:05 you missed a wonderful trip.

Any body up for going up to Holyoke or Rinehart lake next weekend if the weather stays this nice? Copper Canyon is always a good trip.

I can't go next weekend. I'm tied up for the next three weekends.

It was a good trip. Would have been good if the road on the ground went where the map said it did. Oh well! We were out of time anyway.

I had a lot of fun, it was nice to see some other Land Rovers. It's a shame we didn't quite make it because of time and map issues but at least we got some exercise rolling that rock over.

Did anyone get a photo of rolling that rock out of the way? It's amazing what teamwork and a Jack-all can do.

It was a great trip and a beautiful day, my son Brandon really enjoyed it, especially when we went up the mountain and back down, he was to busy looking in front of us and hanging on I had to tell him to take pictures of the scenery around us LOL :) . He really wants to do it again :) Sorry no pics of the rock, I was one of the ones helping to get it out of the way LOL :D.

Had a great time as well. Can't wait for our next run. Would love to do more hill climbing.
Are there any photos posted? Where?
Lets plan a day out for November.

Hi Ron

Glad you had a good time, it was a nice day for a drive. You could check with Steve Norton he took a lot of photos he may have some of your rover in action, I took just a few photos this trip. As a group we do not seem to post many photos up on the Rover landers photo gallery of our drives. I do not know why. Maybe no one knows how. About the only photos that get onto the rover landers photo page from the Island are from our annual June get together at Greg's place in Duncan.

Greg used to post a lot of great Island Rover photos up on the" Van Isle Land rover Network" but it will not allow him to any longer.

We could try for another drive around Duncan on the Remembrance Day weekend. There are lots of good trials up here. If enough people show interest in doing another drive maybe we will.

I would be very interested in a drive for that weekend if I didn't have an engine swap to do. I'm not sure when I'll get it done as I don't really know what I'm doing. I've got some studying to do, I guess!

With that said, if anyone feels like lending a young fella a hand with an engine swap over the next few months, I'll happily provide some cold ones. I have to get my mitts on an engine hoist first, should be very soon.

Hi Victor,

I would love to go out on the Remembrance Day weekend. A friend of mine would like to joins us as well.

Even if we are only 3-4 trucks, that works for me.
