Snorkle Precleaner

I am wanting to get going on making my snorkel, but I've hit a bit of a roadblock. I want to use a oil bath style prefilter, however, I can't really find any info on the web. I don't really want to go down the road of the Aussie style inlet, as I am pretty much convinced that I would be better off througing a bag of sand down my intake. I did see some of the prefilters that are readily available, however I'd rather stick to something I know works very well. Does anybody have any suggestions where I may be able to find a housing that would be suitable?

Any tractor shop will have them. They're generic for farm and industrial engines. Last one I bought, 20 years ago, was about $80 way back then.

I have a Donaldson pre-filter on my D2, works great even on fluffy white snow..... then it melts & you have to empty the water out of it every so often :wink:

Most of the newer ones do not hold the dirt and do not need cleaning, but the Donaldson bowl type is still the cheapest.

The important bit is to get one that is well sized to the engine. You need to provide engine size, maximum engine speed and boost pressure to the vendor and they can figure out the right size. They will restrict the flow and only work well in a limited flow range.

Thanks for all of the responses. What one seems to be the best one for removing dust? I'd rather spend a little extra money to get a good one, rather than cheap out and get a piece of crap.

I doubt you will find test data, so there would be no way to know. With centrifugal dust removal, it is all about having it sized correctly for the flow. More pressure drop gives better particle removal but hurts performance of the engine. The air filter removes the important stuff These just help improve filter life if you drive in dusty conditions a lot.
