Afternoon all. Well it seems as though I've really gotten into a situation. Drivers side door handle broke. Have a friend with a couple parts vehicles so I went over and got a new one. Took old one out, replaced with new one. Now I am unable to start it, opening the doors sets off the alarm. Tried putting old one back on, but unfortunately made no difference. Sadly I do not have a fob for it, nor is there a key for the new door handle.
Has this happened to anybody before?
Any solutions? Other than spending thousands on getting a new fob made.
Anybody local (Cassidy, vancouver island) that would be willing to help? I will pay cash at a regular shop rate if somebody can get this thing up and running. Desperately need a 4wheel drive right now.
Thanks for any and all help and advice. If its hopeless let me know, I can take it.
Kevin
P.s. Bit more info, hope its relevant: 96 Discovery - 140,000 km's, passenger side is sticking sometimes - also don't have a key for the new handle.

Re: alarm issue, changing door handle
I just bought a 97 D1. I haven't taken possession yet, but I'm interested in how you make out because I may face the same problem later.
I searched some LR forums and found this. I hope it works. (With the new, working lock in), lock the door with the key. Make the tea. Come back 5 min later and unlock with key. They said it should clear it.
A similar post said to do basically the same thing from inside: get in lock all the doors using the central lock on the driver's door, wait, unlock and open door and it should hopefully clear.
A low battery can cause havoc. Is the battery fully charged? Disconnecting the battery overnight may discharge all the capacitors and allow for a fresh boot of the electronics in the morning.
I have heard that, when stealing electronically immobilized cars, they can be forced rekeyed using the ORB-II socket, but I have no idea how to do that!
Good luck! I hope you get an early Xmas miracle.

Atlas alarms in Vancouver can help you out and usually very cheap... Mom and pop type thing and have several cheap knockoff fobs...

Re: alarm issue, changing door handle
Just change the lock tumbler from your old door handle into the new one. I just did it on my '92 RRC, took about 20mins.
The drivers door lock seems to control the lock/alarm system.
If you want to lock your doors without arming the alarm, close all doors & then open the drivers side rear door, push down the drivers front door lock & close the rear door. All doors should lock, but alarm will not be armed.
To reset the fob on a ORB-II , just "google" it.
2 button fobs are easy to find on EBay. the older 1 button fob (pre-'95 Disco 1) are hard to find.
Also note that only North American fobs will work as the Freq. is different than those else where. (again google)
If the pass side lock is sticky, the actuator is weak. Mine is the same, I have to unlock it with the key.

Reset Land Rover Alarm
Note 1: Must be carried out in 8 seconds to access learn mode. Best done with two people. You should have both remotes available or second one will not work.
Note 2: If you only have one remote program it twice.
Open hood and have assistant hold hood alarm switch down.
From inside car, with all doors closed, ignition off and all lock buttons up:
Turn ignition on then off (no need to actually start car);
Cycle drivers door button down then up (manually lock driver's door);
Assistant now releases hood switch;
Turn ignition on then off;
If done correctly, horn will beep once and dash LED will light up. This indicates the learn mode has been accessed. If this doesn't happen repeat 1 through 6.
From inside car, push and hold first remote. The dash LED should flash 8 cycles a second for one second indicating that the code was received. If this does not happen repeat steps 1 through 6 again.
Push and hold the second remote, if the code is received the dash LED will flash 8 cycles indicating that the code was received. If this does not happen repeat 1 through 8 again.
Note: Turning the ignition on at any time will cancel the learning process. The system can only store two remote codes and must be done at the same time. If you only have one remote program it twice.

It may be worth while to unplug the battery for 5 minutes. You never know with these high quality electronics. :roll:
