!962 Dormobile propshaft question
Hi Guys
I am installing 2 new prop shafts. Brand name not aftermarket. They sure are not the quality of the originals I took off. Anyway on to the question.
They are greasable but I can not get grease to come out of all the 4 corners off the crosses. This does not seem proper to me. I have heard that you can lightly tape the ends of the crosses with a hide face hammer to centre the cross to loosen up a tight joint and get it to accept grease. I tried this it did not help the grease to come through. Should I use them any way? Maybe they will take grease after being run a little?
The cross on one end is also very tight to turn back and forth in one direction. Maybe because no grease is getting in?
Thanks for any ideas. Victor

Re: !962 Dormobile propshaft question
Funny Victor I was just doing this last night!
My new rear prop (GKN) was a little tight as well. I also could not get grease to come out all the bearing caps. I ran it for a 100km's or so and tried again so far no luck. From what I've read you need to hit (not tap) the yokes near the cups to try and settle the bearings and cups a little then pump as much grease as you can into the uj and eventually it will work its way out. I ran out of grease doing this last night so no success here yet. I wouldn't run or install the props until this works ,as the grease in the uj's is only for assembly and not for driving on. Enjoy the mess!

Hi Matt
Thanks for replying. It looks like you have to make sure and purge the limited amount out grease installed when the joint is manufactered. Fresh grease has to come out from each end of the cross. That makes sense.
Okay after also wasting 1/2 a tube of grease and a lot of time I have found a few more possible cures. Tap the end of the cross to centre the universal (did not help) Try pulling the driveshaft hard in the opposite direction as you try to pump grease in (did not help.) If grease will still not come out as a last resort remove the circlip to let the pressure off and try greasing again. I guess I am going to give this a try. I have never had to do this before on a brand new universal.
What really bugs me is the big sticker on each drive shaft that says INSPECTED AND FOUND OKAY I will let you know how I make out .

Sounds like we're doing the same things. I have installed mine and used it now for about 200km I haven't found any odd play or noises so I'm just going to run it for a while and lightly grease the joints over the next few months. We'll see if my uj's seize or loosen soon enough.

Hi Again Matt
Okay I removed a circlip gave it a light tap with a brass hammer to release the pressure , attached the grease gun and grease flowed out of all the proper places. Squeeze the cup back in with a vise and socket, reinstall circlip and repeat on the other axis. All is well now. The grease that came out kind of looked like vaseline. I am glad to get proper grease in.
Talk with you later Victor

Hey Victor,
Make sure the new bearings/u-joints are not too tight (to move by hand), I did that once on my 2a and the u-joint bearings disintergrated on the highway on the first trip out!
I figured it would loosen up once it get it got working, it sure did!! ....
Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy
Thanks for the tip. I did have one joint that was much too tight. When removing the circlips I noticed that they were not very good quality and measured them with a caliper. The worst one varied in thickness from .o64 to .071 on the same circlip! All the old ones I had from the original driveshafts were .065 dead on all the way around the circlip. I ended up sanding down 2 circlips to the same thickness and removing and installing untill I got it correct. It seems good now, nice and even in all directions.
Bye for now Victor

Sanding down the Circlips.... that's impressive! How do you hold a circlip to sand it?
I have often thought they should have various thicknesses of circlips on U-joint bearing kits so you can choose your best fitting one!
Good to hear its coming together, I feel a "in the garage" article coming up for the next Rover-Lander news letter!

Hi Andy
To sand them I just used hand pressure and medium emery cloth on a flat surface and just kept checking with the caliper.
I finished the rear propshaft today and found a.O10 thousand shim between one of the circlips and the cup. Thats a new one on me. I never come across this before, maybe thats normal but I doubt it. Anybody else ever find universal joints set up with shims? This is a name brand propshaft I sure am glad I did not order one of the cheap aftermarket ones!
Anyway its done. Victor
