Britania Mine (Mount Sheer) exploration run - Saturday 17th
When - Saturday, 17 Nov 2012
Where - Britania Mine (Mount Sheer) exploration run (1 daytrip - 9am to 4pm)
Description - Britania Mine (Mount Sheer) exploration run - a 1 day run up to the old town site of Mount Sheer (near Squamish) Led by RL member Chris Mac.
The Town of Mount Sheer which is located high in the mountain above the Britania Mine was once the main town site in the Glory days of the Britania Mine, once the largest producer of copper in North America. Before the days of the Sea to Sky Highway & road access, when everything and everyone had to come in by boat.
Today the town site is just a few foundations and some left over rusty equipment but lots of history and nostagia and a good excuse to get out and up in the mountains......
More information and meeting times / meeting places to be announced

Agreed! It sounds great. I'd love to come.
I'm remembering the refrain, "I could have brought the Range Rover", from the last trip so I think I will safely leave my car at the end of the pavement until I can get something suitable.
Therefore, anyone have a spare seat for a passenger? Cheers.

Sound Great! Should we expect snow? Good snow tires or chains?

Sounds like a good trip. I'd like to come along with my old '60 S2 88": any suggestions from other club members as to whether this would be inadvisable?

Re: Britania Mine (Mount Sheer) exploration run - Saturday 1
Great to see lots of enthusiasm, I have not been up this road before so I can't really comment too much on the road conditions, but from what I have heard it is a faily open gravel track. I hope the weekend we go is before too much snow has fallen but we should always expect snow at high elevation at this time of year. (so yes, bring chains if you have them).
The Series trucks should have no problem, the convoy will move slow and steady from the highway onwards.
Maybe Chris Mac can give us some more details on the road conditions? Are you out there Chris???
Cheers, Andy

As long as your, or anyone's for that matter, Rover is in reliable condition there is no reason that it cannot participate in any club event.I'd like to come along with my old '60 S2 88": any suggestions from other club members as to whether this would be inadvisable?

I was up there recently, the road has been serviced recently, no more "tank traps", well groomed, it is steep near the top by the main shafts, the lower townsite will prob not be a problem. There will be little chance of pinstriping, tho I know a few roads down that are fun and will cause "some" pinstriping. It's a nice and relaxing day trip. I'll check it this weekend/week and a few days before regarding the snow level.

Tentatively yes; need to source chains or winters, or both. Could have a extra seat too.

Re: Britania Mine (Mount Sheer) exploration run - Saturday 1
This proposed Britannia trip appears to enter restricted areas of the Britannia Mine. The Britannia Mine is owned and managed by the Province of British Columbia and is regulated subject to an approved Mines Act Permit. Access is restricted and approval to enter onto the mine can only be granted by the Britannia mine manager. All other access is considered trespass. Please contact me if you would like the name and phone number for the mine manager, however, I can tell you from the activities proposed that you will not be granted access. The mine manager will be on site on Saturday, November 17, 2012 to monitor all activities.

Hi Waves... thanks for the note.
I don't believe we are entering any restricted areas, but just to re-confirm I have sent you a PM requesting more information on these areas,
Cheers, Andy

I responded to your PM yesterday and to confirm, the proposed trip will require entry onto restricted areas. The access roads leading to, and the former Mt. Sheer townsite itself, are restricted.
Access to the site is restricted to protect both the general public and the mine workers from hazards associated with the abandoned mine infrastructure, as well as the ongoing remedial operations. These operations include site investigations, monitoring programs, road maintenance and the disposal of waste sludge generated by the water treatment plant. That sludge is transported via mining trucks from the town site to the top of Jane Basin where it is disposed of at an approved landfill.
The access road is also deactivated each year to reduce erosion damage caused by significant rain and snowfall during the winter months. Deactivation work was completed late last month.
I can provide the mine manager contact information if you would like, however, he has already contacted me indicating concern with the proposed Rover Lander trip. We would appreciate the cooperation of the Rover Landers to not access the mine site.
Please note that any unauthorized access to a mine is a contravention of the Mines Act Regulation and Code and is considered an offence. An offence is liable to fines and penalties.
Regards.

Just curious Waves... What is your interest here?
Both of your total posts are on this topic, yet none before?
Are you just making Waves?
Perhaps you have another route suggestion for our club?

Re: Britania Mine (Mount Sheer) exploration run - Saturday 1
Hi All,
Yes we will have a Club run on Saturday, we may not be able to get up to Mount Sheer as planned but we do have a back-up location if needed. I am waiting for a guy in the BC Forestry dept to get back to me for confirmation.
Here are some meeting details;
When - Saturday 17th November
Time - 9.00am and 9.30am
Where - Tim Hortons at Squamish (on highway #99)
Fuel up, buy lunch etc before the 9.30am departure time. Bring warm clothes, snow chains (if you have them).
We plan to be back on the highway by 4pm,
Cheers, Andy

Re: Mine exploration run - Saturday 17th
It was a great turn out, lots of keen explorers not afraid to get a little wet!
After discussions with the Mine officials and not wanting to run through any of the restricted areas up to Mount Sheer we change our direction to visiting the old Osprey Mine camp and the Ashlu FSR.
The heavy rain did make for some spectacular swolen rivers, waterfalls, big puddles and lots of mud & wet leaves. (tough on the camera though!). Will post some photos up in the Gallery soon...... (if you have any photos please send them to me)
Cheers, Andy
