2.5 NA, what is normal noise?

#1 Post by Greg S » Sun Sep 02, 2012 9:39 pm

I've got only about 24,000 kilometers under my seat on this low mileage 2.5 naturally asphyxiated diesel; 124,000 on the motor.

When I got it I remarked how quiet it was and didn't have what I thought was the typical diesel knock when it was running. Now it does. Why didn't it before and is the knock normal? I'd refer to it as the diesel "rattle".

Have you just started using different diesel? The first time a used winter diesel in my old 2.5na 110 I thought then engine was broken it made so much more noise than on summer diesel.

Not different that I know of. But I was running all last winter with what I supposed was winter diesel and I almost always buy it at the same station. I don't know that they would be starting to use winter diesel yet down here on the coast. Maybe, but I'll ask at my station.

I noticed something similar years ago on a motorcycle. I had just bought the bike and filled up at my normal station a couple times, then for some reason bought gas at one of the other major names; regular each time. I got less than a block down the road (enough time for the gas to get used out of the float bowl) and the engine started to knock so bad I thought it had blown a bearing, or rod or something equally as noisy. Phoned the dealership and they diagnosed over the phone, I didn't believe them till I had dumped some of the gas and filled with premium.

Hi Greg, I would check the injection timing and do a valve set on it, make sure it has the buttons on top of each valve. Is the knock in a particular location / cylinder, you can use a mechanics stethescope to try to isolate the location and narrow it down.

Just finished rebuilding a 2.5 NA, can't waite to get it running.

Hi Greg,
Is the noise noticeable at idle or at all points in the throttle range? I ask this because my old 2.5 had a sweet spot for it's idle rpm and I noticed that a slight adjustment to the throttle linkage made a big difference in rattle and noise at idle. Give it a try if the other options don't pan out.
