tail lights out

#1 Post by larry emrick » Thu Dec 29, 2011 7:35 pm

Hi All: I just discovered that both tail lights on our '74 series 3 are out, as well as the rear side lights and the number plate light.
Everything else is working including the head lights, signals, emergency flashers, horn, wipers, gauges etc.
I swapped the fuses around and checked the bulbs but still no luck.
Counting from the top, which fuse on the panel under the steering column is for the tail lights?
All suggestions are appreciate and thanks to all.

Happy New year, Larry and Pippa.

Check the ground is connected at the back of the truck. There is a loom that runs through the right hand chassis member and drops out right by the rear cross member. Everything plugs in right there. Check to see if it's plugged in and check with a volt meter or test light to see if there is power to that point. 5 wires there IIRC; ground, tail, L turn, R turn, Brake. The lights you have out all come off the red wire.

Which fuse? Sorry, I'm familiar with the Series II which don't have a fuse on the lighting circuit.

Hi Greg

That worked. After fiddling for ages cleaning contacts and connectors on the left side it took me about five minutes to discover that the connector on the right side was disconnect from the red wire.
Lights now all working with the added benefit that I cleaned all the mud off the rear underside to get at the wiring harness. Many thanks for your helpful advice.
