Wing top mirrors
I'm trying to get the S2 through icbc bull dung to get collectors plates. So far I need a set of round wing mirrors. Would like them to be in reasonable shape. Can anyone help me out?? Rectangular mirrors will be appreciated as well.

Mirrors on mine are in rough shape, but I would be interested in hearing about what ICBC's criteria are for collector plates on a Rover, as well as areas they are particularly looking at/for.
Was considering those plates after a restoration, but if its too finiky/hassle then I may as well enjoy her as is.
thanks

 If they don't like what they see they turn you down. They look at everything. If they turn you down it's up to you to plead your case with the information to back it up. The so called expert on Land Rovers probably has never owned a Series vehicle or a Land Rover come to think of it. He's just a bureaucratic pons that has to make decisions about your car without knowing absolutely nothing about the marque. I will say this though. Once I produced good info for him he started to help me out. The 4 faults that he failed me on are now down to 2. I think :-)

Hi Derrick I am sitting here looking at my original 1962 118 page owners manual that came with the dormobile. On page 88 (which is optional equipment) it clearly lists exterior chrome plated boomerang mirrors as an option.
If I was able to scan this I would send you a copy of the relevant page. But you will have to wait a couple of days.
However I think the BC motor vehicle act requires at least one outside mirror.
So you might as well just buy a couple.
I think they work quite good on my rover. It is nice to be able see that a loaded concrete truck is riding your bumper uphill waiting for the next passing lane.
Victor.

Last time I checked for inspection purposes only a rear view mirror mounted inside the vehicle was required to be 'legal' but to be original is something else.
I thought they were coming out with a modified collector status for bc which allowed subtle period correct changes such as a radio or different wheels.

 Thanks Victor. I have the options book(from 1962) in PDF from the OVLR and I sent it to the guy who is making the decision. In actual fact coming from the factory there were a lot of options. Like passenger seat, outside mirrors, etc... since we are talking about an agricultural vehicle. However the crux of the matter is that there is holes in the wing tops where a previous owner has had wing mirrors. The holes are now filled with rubber bungs. This is not good enough for icbc. If I decide to go with no mirrors these holes have to be removed cosmetically. That's not happening. I'll remove the defender style mirrors and replace them with the old style wing top mirrors.Trying to find out what is original to the car is another story. Even going on the Series 2 club site it is not clear. Rectangular or round mirrors is the question? :?

My series 3 has holes with plugs in the front fenders and there is the remains of a bracket under the drivers side door hinge for a 'normal' door mirror. I thought the north american trucks did not have wing mirrors, I have a couple other 50's-60's english vehicles that were never fitted with wing mirrors.
Check out the modified collector status here
http://www.icbc.com/registration-licens ... -collector
Applies to only 1958 vehicles and older so it looks like you just made the cut, might be worth considering to get you on the road quicker and without those ugly wing mirrors! (unless you like them of course!)

Hi Derik
My very original 1962 Dormobile which has benn in the family since the fall of 1964 ( I remember the day my dad brought it home) came with 2 round black metal wing mirrors located near the front edge of the top fender. They are bolted through a metal wing stiffening bracket for the wing which I believe is stock on all rovers of this age.
They are available from all the usual suppliers.
They work fine. Even though every one who rides in my rOver asks"Can you see anything out of those little mirrors".
What else did they fail you on?

 They said the front bumper was wrong. Its the same bumper on mine as there is on all series vehicles, the hole in the right wing for the fresh air intake for the Kodiak heater. Said it wasn't stock. And my front drivers seat. Its worn but not ripped. The seat and mirrors are understandable the other two aren't. I may have cleared up the Kodiak and Bumper faults with just a phone call and an email. I am starting to think that they have a lacky who does the leg work and passes it on to the 2 other fellows who check it over and passes it on for signature. The fellow I talked to on the phone actually addmitted that they don't have experts. Just some pion that does the research. I remember Rick M having to get body work on his 109 because icbc said he couldn't have rivets showing??
It will all work out in the long run. 8)

Carefully check into the kind of insurace you get with collector plates. A friend of mine has a very nice '66 t-bird, and got collector plates for it. He had it parked under a temporary shelter, and last year the shelter fell under the snow and caved in the roof. Collector plate insurance is much more picky about things, and the damage to his car wasn't covered.
Also is having the vehicle continuing to look as new as possible. For the t-bird that was the plan, but I don't think I'd have the will to keep a series Land Rover looking nice...

I received collector plates for my Series III 109, and there was no clause about not running at night. Only real stipulation is not being able to drive it to work.gudjeon wrote:Collector's plates run the gauntlet of having to have original equipment for the day. That and you can't run it at night and use it to drive to and from work.
I did have wing mirrors on mine, however they were an add-on by me and not stock at all...maybe that's why they are calling for you to have them... sorry...I got them from
http://www.lrseries.com/shop/product/li ... ror&page=1
I also had defender seats and a few other mods such as the iron goat door cards...I did also send along a letter in addition to the photo's detailing the history of my X-MoD truck and maybe that's why i got my plates.
I have since sold the truck to a fellow in Calgary.
Cheers and good luck.

Derek. Your 88 would have originally had wing mirrors as an import to NA but after the mirrors were moved to the door, the wing tops continued to have the hole, right up and as far as I know to the end of the S3, but they were plugged by the rubber plug. I don't know how to prove that with documentation. I believe you can make "safety" modifications and my opinion would be that the door mounted mirrors are certainly for that reason.
The Kodiak heater was a dealer installed item for all Canadian sold Land Rovers, so it is not a factory option but was a defined market standard fitment. Not North American so much as Canadian, I seem to recall hearing that not all USA market Land Rovers had them.
I have a couple original wing-top mirror brackets and heads if you want them. The mirror head is not in terrific condition as I recall. UV damage has made the plastic head craze and gray.

Hi Derek
This is getting to be a very lively topic. I suggest you go to ICBC s collector department and read the rules your self. There is also a organization in BC called (the speciality vehicle association of BC) they have excellent links to ICBCs collector rules and modifications that are allowed.
This site explains in plain english what modifactions are allowed
Your 1958? series 2 would have definatly had round wing tops mirrors. For $50? bucks you might as well put them on and save yourself $500 in insurance costs.
You can drive your rover at night because it came with head lights originally. Not driving at night applys to very old old cars with kerosene stlyle headlights.
Your rover has to be kept in a locked garage at your primary residance when you are at home with it. It can not be stored in a car port or kept outside when you are home. But you are allowed to use it for holidays.
You can drive it as much as you want but never to work or to go to school.
Terry Anns web site has a lot of info on kodiak heaters.
The poor workers at ICBC can not possibly know the specs on every old car made, just give them a chance and keep sending them pictures to prove your points.

8) Thanks Victor and Greg. The Kodiak heater thing I knew about and sent the icbc fellow an electronic copy of the instalation instructions that came straight from Land Rover. In the instructions it actually shows where the hole has to be cut on the wing. I think now the only things that need to be done are the wing mirrors and drivers seat cushion. To be honest the seats were going to be re done anyway. I would like firmer foam put in to support my sorry ass  Victor I really am being kind to these people. However it doesn't change the point that they know nothing about Land Rovers. Instead of Gov't lackies doing this job, it sounds more professional if they would put guys like Alan Simpson and Aaert van der Starr on contract as experts. Because they are experts. Paid per unit. Any way the one fellow is working with me and he seems to be a little more open than the first fellow I talked to.
Greg, I'll take you up on the wing mirrors. Maybe I can make a sow's ear look like silk purse. If that is possible. Joan and I are taking off for a few days. I'll call you when I get back home.
Cheers

Hi Derek
ICBC does contact garage or repair experts for advice. We were discusing this last week at a jag club meeting and one of the repair shop owners that was there does get contacted about collectors questions. He is also an appraiser for collector cars.
There are standards to uphold for the collector plate division and if they were not enforced the program would end, as any (old) beater would want in.
ICBC makes money on collector plates as these cars are pampered and rarely are involved in accidents. It is a great program.
Hang in there it just takes time. You will be ready for The Sanichton Old English swap meet and show and shine in 3 weeks.

 Got my wing top mirrors from the Rover Park Lads in Edmonton. Ordered them yesterday at around 2 pm got them today around 11 am. I'm pretty happy about that kind of service. Seat bases are at the upholserer for new covers and firmer foam. Looks like ICBC will get the rest of their pictures this weekend.
Thanks to all for all your support and help.
