Need help choosing proper antenna for a defender.

#1 Post by spydee » Fri Mar 11, 2011 12:59 am

Anyone who can educate me on what type of antenna i will need to hook to a uniden 520 cb radio? Is the aluminum body a problem? And what is an ideal spot to mount on a 110? A few searches have led me to a few brands like firestik, wilson, k40, and thunderpole. I am very new to cb radios and antennas. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

i usually went to a large trucking company. Like FREIGHT LINER. and got one from them. My best advice is a fiberglass on , and essential is a large spring base. they will have choices of mountings. if you have a rack, that type is good. or a mount that will go into the side of the hood opening. some that have a bull bar or light bar mount them center on the front. look through the photos here and see many types.
all the best. rick mellenger

Jeff, the use of CB is getting limited. Many people are now going to VHF radios. The license is pretty easy to get and the range is much better. Just something to consider.

Do you have a roof rack on your 110? That will affect your mounting options.

Yes, but only if everyone has VHF. Nobody here uses it, so you would have no one to talk with.

on the last 3 or 4 Roverlanders trips I have done, about 60% of the trucks had VHF, and 25% had CB.

I have both, which is handy, but VHF seems to be on the upwards trend.

When I am down in the states CB still seems pretty popular.

And if Jeff lived in Vancouver, that would be great. It is a chicken and egg thing.

Ah, good point, I didn't notice you were in Alberta Jeff. I also didn't know that VHF is not common in Alberta. I need to get out more.
