Ever since I had a small Die-Cast toy of an early Land Rover as a child, I have wanted one in a 1:1 scale. This beauty kept looking at me from time to time as I would pass by it, I told myself one day I would own it, now I finally do!
The first drive home was a bit unnerving, an unfamiliar vehicle, unsure of reliability, and it felt like I was being shaken by a large viking woman (thus the name - that and it seems that "Flight of the Valkyries" plays in my head every time I drive it.
I intend on one day restoring her to full formal glory, but for now I intend to enjoy her immensely, she has a strong engine and for fifty three, starts up easily and drives like a dream.

I also like the fact that most cars never tailgate me, and most people give me a fairly wide berth, might have something with the exterior looking a bit ragged, still unsure if I want to repaint her or just leave the apocalypse paint scheme on her. Any ideas?

Nice to see this truck has new home. I've driven past it for years down by Gonzales Beach. If I remember correctly it has a faint, hand painted, Shriner's Circus logo on it somewhere, always thought that was cool :lol:
I like the random paint scheme but they also look really good painted one colour; your truck, your choice.

I was looking at the Founders Day photos, loads of incredible rovers, that video of the teeter totter was incredible too. wish I could have made it over, truck or not... maybe next year.
was looking for the circus logo, there is a small remenant of something on the drivers door, it would be cool to find out more of the history of my truck, who owned it, original color, equipment, etc,

Seems to me it has been on some pretty neat expeditions in recent years (1998-99). I seem to recall being told about Alaska/Yukon. Did I see it in Portland in 1999? I could be totally off the mark, but---I seem to recall some such stories.

I got this truck from Steve (I think he was a member here), until taking the plates off it when selling it, he used it as a daily driver and attended a few gatherings on the island. He did a lot of work to it in the years he owned it, replacing the brake master cylinder, gathering many of the missing parts, and documenting everything he did while owning it. He thinks that her and her sister were both forestry vehicles, her sister was stripped down by someone for parts before the owner could retrieve her from the woods apparently. I do have a second transmission, and another full set of military axles (will post pics later to try to get some info on where I can get info on rebuilding the locking hubs on those) I know the door tops, tailgate, and a few other parts were purchased at a much later date from a wrecker(the door top has that circus painting on it).
Would love to do that Cannol Road trip, but I need to do some more work before she is more reliable, especially getting out and using her for what she was made for, seems a waste to have her only for the dry roads. found that the old cloth woven battery leads and leads to the starter were frayed right down to the copper, close to a few bits of bulkhead, major fire hazard. I am a bit scared off now with the lack of parts for these older ones... but I think most can be easily manufactured or repaired with my current tools.

:D I love this old truck. The patena is very remarkable. I wouldn't dare touch her with a paint brush, or sprayer. Let her show her years. Your choice of course. My choice would be to bring her up to a high standard of road/off road worthiness. There are parts out there if you look. Between Aart, Alan, Rover Park Boyz and Rovers North you should be able to gather all the parts you would ever need or want. All the best and enjoy your great purchase.
Hopefully we will see you at all the shows and gatherings on the island.
