Series crashbox and convalescing.

#1 Post by Greg S » Mon Dec 20, 2010 7:13 pm

Just rambling here folks. Don't read on if you bore easily. I found out they (just who is "they" anyways?), at work, had missed crediting me with a week of vacation last year, and again this year, so I had to take it all at once, that was the first part of December, now I'm bored, but convalescing as I had an operation last Thursday and don't go back to work now till January 4th. I have no issue with the surgeon but the anaesthesiologist seems to have kicked the crap out of me. I'm up and functioning but am not supposed to lift anything over 10 pounds till after Christmas. Apparently I can go golfing or play tennis after tomorrow and I'm looking forward to that as I couldn't play either one previously.

Before I went for the operation I started to prepare an old Series IIA gearbox to go in my 109. The one in there now was one I put together using parts from three or more gearboxes all of different years. Note: Don't do this unless you have to. All the parts looked pretty good but weren't matched sets of gears. There has always been a lot of noise and fourth kicks out, kicks out a lot these days. Reverse throws itself violently out of gear lately too. This contraption has been in place for about 20,000 miles so that isn't bad. And it doesn't leak! The gearbox I'm working on is from a 109 of the same year as mine and has been sitting around for many years, the last year and a half in the rain and weather in my backyard.

Early December I got the abandoned unit pulled from the chassis behind the barn and hauled to my neighbours shop. It sat there looking pretty sad, all covered in years of dirt and grime. A few hours with a scrapper, wire brush and some wrenches and I had it stripped and mostly clean. Once it was separated to it's major parts, PTO, T'case & gearbox, I drained the gearbox of oil so I could have a look. I was somewhat disappointed to have a few cups of water drain out before any oil. I guess the water sat in the bottom of the case as all the gears and bearings seem to be corrosion free. I'm not sure how that happened. I replaced the rear seal, found the output gear to be a little loose on the mainshaft and ignored it. The gearbox sits ready to go and now I'm going to clean the T'case and change seals. PTO looks the same as mine and in better shape so it's going to get cleaned up too.

The works are sitting there waiting for me to feel good enough to scrape and clean. I also need to wait till I can deal with the weight. At least I have work waiting for me on the Land Rover, it keeps my interest up.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Series ramblings....

#2 Post by ANDYD » Mon Dec 20, 2010 7:56 pm

Hi Greg,

Had to chuckle after reading your ramblings.... took me right back to the days I had my series 11a & it's gearbox apart in my 6ft x 4ft garage!
Not sure I have enough desire to go back "there" again, but like us all I'm sure I will be "there" again one day!
Anyhow, good to hear your on the mend again, take it easy!

Merry Christmas to all the Island Folk!

Andy :D

Greg,
isn't that what kids are for?
glad to hear your ramblings, hope your feeling better.

BTW, that muncie transfer case adapter and t-case that was on my series seems to have ended up in your neck of the woods. i saw it on kijiji nanaimo i believe, maybe you should scrap the tranny build and use the adapter for a build.
