rusty door frames

#1 Post by jeremyillingworth » Tue Dec 07, 2010 9:47 pm

I went to look at a prospective series Land Rover recently. It was overall good but there was some rust on the door frames, mostly on the front side at the corners. It looks like its a bit more than surface rust. There was also some on the hood frame and a bit creeping through on the dash, although its the doors that worry me most. Can they be fixed or do they need to be replaced? I know they're available but expensive. Is this a common occurance?

I have some pictures but don't think I can post them here. I will see about getting a Flickr account or I can mail them if anyone wants to have a look.

Here are some pictures of the rust on the door frame and hood frame. I don't think the hood is bad but I'm not sure about the door. Can I replace the lower door frame but reuse the door skin? I would have to have to paint it as it will never match.

When I rebuilt my truck, I had the same thing. From your pictures the rust doesn't look that bad. This is what I did. On the doors I removed the aluminum skins. At this point you can weld up any large holes (I didn't bother). Then I took the frames to Redi-Strip in Delta to have cleaned. Then to the galvanizer. You just need to be patient and gentle when pealing the door skin edges off of the frame as they can be easily damaged. When you get the frames back, etching primer and then paint.

For the hood, I drilled the rivets and removed the support. I had that also cleaned then galvanized. Once again you can paint it any colour you want, but only after using an etching primer.

This way, the galvanized parts will last a long time.

As for the door tops, those are a little bit more difficult. I didn't bother with mine. Maybe it is better buying some new ones. I think that Wise Owl has some solid replacement.

Hope this gives you some ideas. Good luck.

Gee, the door frames look pretty good to me. Mine were missing about 4 inches of the frame in the two bottom corners. I put new doors on that are in much worse condition than what you're fussing about. I must just have a low standard; but I drive mine. It is a H**l of a long way from a show girl but I've been proud to have her in the Portland All British Field Meet and several car shows in Victoria. I always get complimentary feed back despite the poor paint, rust and the dents.

The door tops may be rough - you will know more by removing the trim panel. New replacements would be the route to go there if necessary. The bottoms look pretty good from the picture. You really need to look at them from the bottom. If they are pretty sound then just clean up the surface rust and maybe oil the insides and they will probably last for a good many years yet. Replacement frame sections are available that can be welded in place once the skin is removed.
