So the wife is hinting at me at how she misses the range rover. I am very familiar with the RRC's as i have owned 5. 2x LWB's and 3x SWB's. but new to the disco family. she likes the shape of the disco i love the looks of the classic range rover.
I am going to buy on a budget so either will need some work. just looking for best options.

I am considering an 88 rangie and thought this would be the best option with the 230 transfercase and the 3.5 motor (or is it the 3.9) being less problematic.
I would love another LWB with air suspension but i had problems with both of mine with the 4.2 motor.

the wife still is considering the disco so i have to keep an open mind as she will be driving it the most.
what do you think.
this will be a family oriented vehicle with 2 little ones on a budget.

I'm 5'10" - 225 and Cyndi's Disco-II is a little small for me (seat all the say back and down and my left arm never gets truly comfortable). The '94 RR I drove fits me better, but the Disco fits Cyndi perfectly (5'5" - 120).

Remember to budget a good $3K for head gaskets unless they've already been done. I got the owner down $3,000 on the Disco but got a $3,700 head-gasket bill soon after (including some other needed repairs). I do many of my own repairs, but I wanted warranty on the engine.

5 seats in the Rover, 7 in the Disco.

With a growing family, may be something to consider.

I know you only have two right now, but sometimes physically separating them on a trip results in a happier mommy.

we are both pretty short so the head room is not an issue for us. as for head gasket, that is why i was considering the older model with the 3.5, they were less prone to that issue as far as i remember. but saying that i will definately be hunting for something that has already had that issue taken care of if i buy a newer model.

you are right about the kids, but they are 4 years apart and the new one is only 3 months old so keeping them apart is not that important yet...growing family, hmmm, I am already overwelmed, I think two is a good number at this point in my life, lol. :wink:

one thing i do like about the disco is the idea of the side swinging rear door, makes loading stroller and groceries easier i assume. and i get better axles.

How is the disco engine electric management issues compared to the RRC?

Thanks for the info Rob,
i am still debating on how i want to spend the budget. buy a rover at a higher price range and hope there is nothing wrong, or buy something like that 88 RRC for very very cheap knowing what is wrong and have a bigger budget to fix it as i will do all the work myself.

I think if i wanted to spend around 5000 i would definately buy BCDISCO's 99 disco 1 that is posted for sale here as it looks like he has taken care of it and comes with all the bells, but that is not part of the budget. i should just buy his disco and sell all the extras to bring the price down.

There is a diesel Disco on Craigslist vancouver right now.

Original diesel imported from Holland, not a conversion.

Probably not cheap, but you may want to take a look.

no price on that diesel so i am assuming by his tone in the ad that it is up there in price. Probably way out of my range.

well we finally made the decision and we have a new addition to the family. we will see if it was the right one. We bought Blairs 99 Discovery. Finally a running rover (for now, lol), its been a while.

she should be fun on the trails. The hard part will be which vehicle to take when we go out, the Iltis or the Disco. I may hook up a tow bar and tow the Iltis out so my wife can drive the rover (this is a good way to get her involved in offroading i think) and i can still have fun with the Iltis.

Congrats again getting your Disco. They are a lot of fun, I have to smile inside every time I see her sitting there ready to go.
Have you picked yours up yet, just in time for the winter that’s arrived?
When next you making it over to the mainland? Founders day for sure, any sooner?

Glen, thanks, got the disco about 2 hours before we got the snow dump, just intime.
not sure when i will make it over. even founders day may be out of the question this year unfortunately. I will try.
