Are you talking about where we drive past the joining of the Hope Brigade trail to the main trail? I'd like to explore down that way as well. Maybe once we get the other one under control we'll have time for that...

not sure where it comes out but from what I have heard,
Whipsaw trail is part of what used to be a wagon trail that started in Princeton and came out somewhere in Hope and was used to bring mail from Princeton area to Lower mainland.

Anyone else know the story?

Hi Kris, Whipsaw creek trail covers an area that was traversed by the Hudson's Bay Company Fur Brigade Trail/Hope Pass Trail. I'm not able to recall all the details which I read up on once but the trail was established as a fixed route for the fur trade to transport furs to and from Yale which of course was the head of navigation on the Fraser. It was thought to be a short cut but the altitude and extreme winter conditions that existed well into late spring and early fall made the trip a hardship for those using it. The trail was abandoned after a short life and was only used occasionally by pack trains and cattlemen thereafter. The meadow area that exists when you drop off granite mountain with the small pond and cabin was apparently a pack train staging area for the HBC, hence the name Hudson's Bay Meadow. There is also a sign which is seriously shot up where the trail splits to go around Lodestone Lake that has a short history written on the back, hope it is still there. I know that horses seem to have access south and west of the HB meadow area aswell as a trail leading off towards the headwaters of whipsaw creek. I don't know if these trails connect but they appear to be unsuited to 4x4 travel. I once spoke with some hikers who had come up to granite mountain from the old Dewdney trail in Manning Park but once again I don't think this trail is passable in a Rover. But then again :twisted:

HEY ITS ALIVE!!!!

This thread is so busy that its logo is now pulsating like a heartbeat. Never had that before.

When Pamela and I were up the Sowaqua Creek FSR last fall, we crossed, according to the map, the Hope Brigade Trail. We actually tried to head up it out of Hope, where it originates as Peers Creek Road. We found that the road had fallen away where it crosses a sandy alluvial fan. Several trucks working together could re-open this in a couple of hours, but we didn't feel comfortable doing it that day by ourselves. (I believe Mr. Peers was one of the founders of Hope BC.)

At any rate, by going back out and up Sowaqua, we were able to view the trail as it appeared on the other side of the creek valley. It looks traversable and would be worth a try when the snow melts.

Hey it’s good to see such interest in the Whipsaw project, and all those who plan to join in, nice start, thanks.

Back to the name game for a sec…is it really all that important at this stage… no…however it has obviously generated a lot of interest in the project as a whole.
