New guy, Series 3 88"

#1 Post by tbirdscott » Tue Oct 12, 2010 8:48 pm

Just picked up a 73 swb off craigslist, runs and drives, good papers, but needs work.

Front body mounts are rotted and the rear of the frame/crossmember will need work, rest of the frame looks like it'd be okay. I did the hammer test. and only one brake works. And it's all mine! haha!

The girlfriend just had to check it out, gave it a thumbs up! just wait till she has to ride in it!

I think it'll be a fun project, looks like theres solid parts resources which will be nice for once.

It sits funny in the pics because the po put the rear axle under the leafs in an attempt to lift it but ciouldn't fit the driveshaft back in. It will be put back proper asap along with getting the brakes up and working. Suprisingly the engine fires up easily and runs pretty well, and it was raining when I looked at it! Been off the road for over 7 years.

I had a series 2 truck guessing 109 when I was younger. Got it off an old farmer for free, couldn't get spark and ended up giving it away to another guy who already had a couple, wish I had it now though.

So watcha guys think, did I just throw away $500 on this old beater or what?

It looks good enough to be fun. Good find!

Parts are available and reasonably priced. You CAN do ALL the work yourself. Some components just aren't worth fixing because buying new is so much cheaper and easier. (Slave cylinders, some chassis repairs as you CAN buy new chassis replacement parts, fire wall repairs etc.)

One of the Rover Lander members has a few Land Rovers and is in your neck of the woods (PG).

Hey! I even know where Willow River is! My address used to be Willow River because I lived WAY out in the sticks, ever heard of Newlands? I lived up there with my old 88 back in the day.

Scott,

Looks like a good starting point there. It has been a little mucked about with but not too bad from the looks of things. Come back often and keep us posted of your progress.

Hey greg I sure do know the newlands area, been out here for 16 years. For as small an area it is between willow river and penny it seems like every one has lived or knows someone who has lived out here. Pretty neat, gotta love the scenery too.

I will probabally make all my frame repairs and rear crossmember myself, because it's cheaper and most importantly more fun! Gonna make everything I can.

Thanks for the welcome john, I'll be sure to keep everyone updated.

Scott,
Congratulations it looks like a great project and if you have your girlfriend on side the rest is a piece of cake, albeit a slightly mouldy, rusty and oil impregnated piece of cake :spinning:

Once you get right into the downtown part of metropolitan Newlands, I lived in the house on the right. At that time it was the only house on the right except for one that had collapsed and one that was a few hundred yards down a private drive. LOL

I was living up there when I got my 88 back from the shop after they installed a Ford V8. Had to drive around for a few weeks with no clutch release as the new manifolds had burnt the flex hose. Delivery of new parts was a bit slow in those days.

Didn't notice any mould Bill but theres enough rust and oil to make up for it.

What kind of V8 did you get installed, any details? Sounds like it'd be a blast.

V8 was a 289. Too much power in the days before 3:54 diff ratios and overdrives. Fit okay and had lots of power, sure sounded nice.

Gerry here in PG . I have several parts off a 1986 LR 110 which may or may not be of use for your project . Parts include a 2.5 N/A diesel engine , t-case , transsmission , radiator , shroud , fan , starter , snorkel , mirrors , doors , door tops , exhaust system for the 2.5 , h20 pump , belts , hoses , front axles etc .

Anyhow , just in case you may be interested as you consider the ' rebuild ' . PM me .
I did the Willow River loop with the local 4x4 club here in PG this past summer . Interesting .

Is that the trail up the north road then down by the lake? Thats a fun trip, done it many times in the trike with a case of beer and the gf, nice mud up there!

I could use a rear crossmember/bumper and I need a pair or front leaf springs. Thats all I know of for sure this far. Thats very cool of you to offer the parts, I appreciate it.

I really gotta invest in a car trailer, waiting to see if a buddy can haul it home this weekend, if not might have to hire a tow truck. The guy I got the rover off of is a good guy, used to work on his toys when I worked at a small engine shop in town, didn't even realise it till he started showing off his collection and i recognised some of them, gotta love pg for that :)
