1983 defender 110 rebuild
Since I safely made back to BC from Newfoundland with the defender I got in Nova Scotia, I have been thinking how to rebuild it. Finally the project started two weeks ago and got some pictures to post. My goal is to build a solid expedition ready truck. I call the 110 "defenta", since it has a toyota 3B turbo diesel instead of a 200/300tdi. I don't have a specific plan yet just go with the flow, fixing anything need to be fixed. cheers :D

I'm new to rover so I don't know the difference between a Series bulkhead and defender bulkhead when I bought it. they are 90% same after comparing mine with others, I guess some Series have the weld-in central dash bracket, defenders don't. To me, its not a big deal, at least the bulkhead is in a good shape, besides I'll build my own dashboard that suits my need.red90 wrote:Yes, why does it have a Series bulkhead?? Looks like everything has been galvanized other than the frame.kRiS wrote:what's the story with the series bulkhead ?
what's wrong with Britpart Poly bushings? :wink:Britpart Poly bushings? Why did you go that route?

Don't sweat the inquisition too much from the guys, most of them are just pretty observant when it comes to anomalies like Series bulkheads on Defenders. I think the question really becomes how did it come to pass that your truck ended up with a galvanzed Series bulkhead and what does that mean with respect to the rest of the build-up by previous owners? People who've been around Land-Rovers for a while are curious about oddities like this because at the very least it seems like an awful lot of work to go to the trouble of re and re 'ing the wrong bulkhead. Anyway thanks for sharing the photos of your project and keep us posted.

Nothing wrong with Brit part bushings....many people are very happy with them! Dave B can share lots of "Bushing changing" experiences with you. I bet he still has the scars to prove it!
It is definatley a good time to change them while you have it all stripped apart, makes for easier access.
Thanks for sharing your build progress...keep it coming..
Cheers,
Andy

RE: the bushings. Most people find the average poly bushing too stiff. They limit suspension travel and transmit more vibrations. The lower quality ones don't seem to last very long either. Most people recommend OEM rubber.
Just asking questions...not trying to ruffle any feathers...
Like is said above, there is nothing wrong with a Series bulkhead other than you lose the Defender dash and it seems like a very strange thing to do for no gain that I can thing of and a heck of a lot of work to re-wire everything.

Your progress looks great, keep up the good work. I like the series dash, the center gauges look nice.
As for the bushings, I installed OEM ones in my 110 a couple years ago and I think they're already done for. I know a few people that have had good results with polys and their suspensions flex pretty well. I don't know the manufacturers of them though.
If you can't bring the 110 to Founder's Day, how about bringing the 416?
