Some friends are doing the Whipsaw last weekend of August, and have asked me to go along. I would have to go in my Discovery. I have 235 85/16 BFG all terrains and 2"+. Other than that, I'm pretty stock...can the car do the trail (I have plenty of scratches & dents, so I'm not too worried about adding to them.
I did the Whipsaw years ago in my stock IIA, and got a few dings, but I don't remember much about the trail...plus i was with the Northwest Challenge group, so lots of good help!

Whipsaw in August..
Hi Devin,
Yes you will have no problem with your Discovery. Apart from a couple of spots where you may need to pick your line carefully or stack a couple of rocks in the right place the rest will be simple.
Check out the past Whipsaw photos in the Gallery, I remember a stock Range Rover with all the low plastic trimmings and road tyres running through with the group,
You may need a tug through the big mud hole near Lodestone (if its not dried up by then.

Yeah, you'll have no problem. We ran it last week with suzuki's LJ's and samurais. All of the LJ's were stock with 205-225s. No issues. I've had a Disco and you'll be great.
Question about Whipsaw and rovers though. I was actually wondering about a series rover. I'm thinking of getting one (a iia). How was the gearing? I was wondering if would be low enough for falcon hill, and a few others. I was hoping to run it both directions. Coming out of the lake mid way, it's a good climb with lots of twisty stuff. Assuming it had the traction (rear locker) how was the stock gearing. Do you end up having to bash it up with momenteum? Or can it crawl it? Stock gearing is 40:1 from what I've seen.

I did the Whipsaw years ago in my 88" Series IIA, fairly stock except for Rocky Mountain parabolic springs (a bit of a lift) and 7.50x16 BFG tires (a bit oversized, but pretty typical) I scraped my rear corner panel once, but that probably came from inexperience. Tractionwise, I was great. Low range is fine too. I have heard mating an early transfercase to a later gearbox will give you a very low 1st low. Someone else might be able to fill you in on the technical details...I think an "A" serial# transfercase on a "C" or later serial gearbox is the combo, but check with someone who is a little better informed than me!
If I trusted the engine in my IIA right now, I would take it in a heartbeat...so it looks like it's the Discovery.
