Hey folks, we are going to combine some fun camping with the Whipsaw bridge planking. We will camp on Friday evening the 23rd at Granite City, down the hill and next to the river. Note - This is on the riverside below the ghost town site, NOT on the government paysite across the river.
Saturday we will leave the tent up and drive up to the bridge site to do bridge repair, and in the evening come back down to Granite city to camp again.
The granite city campspot can take 4 trucks easily, and probably 6 or 7 if everyone is very cosy. We like it because the creek is pretty kid-friendly and it should have a lot less mosquitos than the lodestone lake campsite.
Anyone else want to do that?

OK, it loos like a few are going on this. Should be fun, especially if the nice weather holds.
Let's all chime in to confirm as far as tools and materials, what is needed, what we have already, what we still need, and who is bringing what.
I am sure we can bring a dozen chainsaws, sledge hammers, etc if needed, but that may not be the most efficient.
Shawn, can you jump in here? What do you think we still need, and what do you need carried? I can bring my trailer if needed but that means others transporting stuff somehow to Hope.

Whipsaw bridge planking
Hi Ray,
I was speaking to Shawn this moring to get an idea of what he thinks we need as far as completing the bridge.
We are planning on some planking for the base, Shawn will take care of getting the planking materials, Kris offered to come up with his Sankey trailer (carrying the wood).
So what else is mainly needed is labour (people) and small tools like cordless drills for pre-drilling the nail holes and small sledge hammers for pounding the nails in. Also we will install a side rail which we will use locally sourced wood (windfall) and I believe you are bringing some old fire hose for strapping.
Chainsaws and a small generator would be nice for re-charging the cordless tools.
It sounds like some people will be heading up Friday afternoon and some on Saturday morning, either way camping down by the river at the old Granite City seems a good option (less bugs and more kid friendly). On saying that some may prefer to camp at Lodestone Lake?
On Sunday morning the group will have the option of running through the Whipsaw trail and exiting on Highway 3 or not running the trail and exiting at Coalmont and back on the highway.
For all those that are thinking of coming up, please post your intentions so we can plan on what size of camping area we will need.

that is very helpful.
I will bring a small sledge hammer, some fire-hose/bridge strapping, and my chainsaw.
We will camp at Granite City, and run the trail on Sunday and exit at Hwy 3. We will also bring one of our dogs. She only eats small dogs, so O'Doul should be safe enough.

Sankey trailer
Hi Kris,
Shawn was expecting 20 lengths of 8ft (2x6).
We could split the load between a few trucks and put it on the roof racks?
Trailer would be better...

Whipsaw bridge planking
Hi All,
The bridge completion & planking went well. We also added some more sand bags and redug the drainage channel to keep the new culvert in good operation.
We trimmed (narrowed) and railed the bridge deck to make it obvious that it is for hikers, quads and motorbikes only. The large mud puddle is still the way to go for trucks and it is definitatly passable with out too much trouble.
Thanks to all those who came out and pitched in on a very hot and buggy day. Special thanks to Bill for going out of his way and picking up the planking and hauling it all to the bridge site on his roof.
