Tire Opinion

Having picked up a 99 Disco for my wife's daily driver (and maybe a bit of recreation in comfort), I now need to put decent tires on it.

My initial inclination is to get BFG AT T/As as I've seen them on other trucks and they look great, and I love the MTs on my series truck. But they are rather dear. The first quote I got was $232 a piece.

Does anyone have a suggestion of good tire alternatives for the Disco?

Dave have you tried Costco? I bought BFGoodrich all terrains 225/75R16 for my Suzuki about 10 months ago and only paid $175 a tire, and that included balancing and installation. This is my third set on as many trucks and I think they are fantastic. Excellent all around traction, long lasting and they look great. If I did have one complaint it would be that they are noisier and ride rougher than the stock tires, but you begin to forget about that in no time.

Thanks guys, Its good to hear you agree with my original assessment of BFG AT T/As. The only other one I've seen which impressed me as much as the T/A is the Bridgestone Dueler which in this linked review gets rated even higher than the T/A.

I'll look around this week for the best price.

Congrats on your Disco, is it a 1 or 2? What size tire are you looking for? I might have a few options for ya, keep shopping for your best price, email me your phone number & I’ll give you a call next week if I have some tires.
BTW might you be interested in Goodyear MTR’s as well?

I'd stick to the BFG AT or MT's. The MT's make any disco look the part, I guess 'cause you don't see it very often.

I wouldn't put goodyears on a disco II, The factory goodyear wranglers get chewed up really fast, by about 60K you can feel the vibration through the steering wheel.

I think the BFG all terrians are a great match with discoverys and range rovers.

Tireland is the best supplier I know for BFG.

Congratulations on the receint expansion to your Land Rover family. LOL!

Tires on my 97 dico are 255-65R-16, 109H TOYO A/T Open Country.

Stock size was 235-70R-16 Michelin XPC.

I'm very pleased with them, less body role than the original XPC & quit on the highway.

Hi Dave, nothing gets the crowd going like a good tire(tyre) debate. I will throw my support in for Tireland at Kingsway and Main. Tell them Bill (the guy who bought tires for all his Landrovers) recommended them. Mention the club connection and maybe there is more discount. They are always quick and the best deal IMHO. Also, unlike Cosco they don't whine about putting oversize tires on just because larger options aren't listed in the book.

I can also recommend Tire Land on Kingsway, I’ve purchased tires from them many times, but my first experience with Tire Land is what keeps me coming back as well as very good pricing. I had acquired my first set of MT’s privately & an automotive dealer recommended I go to Tire Land to have them installed which I did. They where very busy & I waited 2 hours to have the rubber mounted & balanced….they didn’t charge me a cent cause I had waited so long…hell I didn’t even utter a word of complaint the whole time. So that made me very happy. :D

I opted for a set of BFG MT T/As, similar to what I have on the Series IIa, but of course sized correct for the Disco. Thanks Paul for the heads up on the deal!

I had them installed tonight at a local Tire shop here in Abbotsford, which seemed timely based on the weather.

Hey your welcome Dave, always happy to help out however I can. Was the trip to Unalloy worth while?

Yes, they have contributed a tug strap, D-shackle, and some tie downs for Founders Day. Unalloy has some pretty intersting stuff there. Too much snow today to look very closely, though.

I also got a contribution of a 125' winch cable, swaged with a hook, today from CanWest Wire Rope.

We're going to have lots of great prizes for Saturday.
