D90 Prices

#1 Post by didgeridude » Mon Oct 05, 2009 6:52 pm

Just curious to know what a person should expect to pay for a 10 or 15 year old Defender. I'd like to get another series truck, but it would also be nice to get something with more creature comforts.

Ummm, say somewhere between $5000 and $50000..... It all depends on condition and work that has been done to it.

Well, there's this one on Buy and Sell right now.

I was really surprised by the price because I thought Defenders were far more expensive than this.[/url]

I don't think this is "right"...it seems to me to be from a company in the states. I recognize the building...can't remember the name of the shop though...could be wrong...I'd jump at it for this price!

Buy & Sell has a regular problem with scam car ads. You can usually tell by 2 things: way to cheap of price, and no contact information.

I don't know how they hope to entrap you when they don't leave any contact method, but they're on there regularly, and often include other luxury vehicles

cheers, Dave

rover on buy and sell looks like a scam

#6 Post by Rob » Mon Oct 05, 2009 10:35 pm

Same rover is posted all over Canada on buy & sell dot com

As far as prices go.... the local market seems to favor the Defenders as being the most pricey (probably due to limited availabllity), series trucks seem to also be getting pretty expensive. The deals to be had are Range Rover Classics and Discoveries. I just sold a very nice 1988 RRC for $2200 and it was in good shape, great on the road and excellent off-road as well (if you ever look at a defender suspension it looks pretty similar to an RRC... essentially a defender is a series body on an RRC chassis and suspension system minus all the leather and frills). For the kind of cash you'd spend on a RRC you'll get a project series truck and nothing at all in the defender line. Discos are also getting pretty easy to buy - the D1s are essentially RRCs with lots of off-road mods available (figure $4000 to get a decent one, maybe less - you'll get a driveable series for that money and maybe a project defender needing a lot of work) and D2s are also getting affordable (figure $7500 - $10,000 which is the kind of money you'll spend on a decent series truck and maybe a beat-up defender, maybe) With a decent set of tires Discos are pretty capable off-roaders as their drive train and suspension systems are very similar to the RRCs. I four wheel my 2001 D2 and it does quite well. At the last rover rally here on the island it was only the discos who played in the mud pit while all the series and defender rigs sat on the grass (so much for the mall-cruiser image). There was a D1 with lockers and mud tires that did really well and my D2 with it's traction control and mildly agressive tires was able to slog through the goo quite well.

Anyway, might be worth you while to look at the alternatives.

Regards, Rob

Thanks for the info. Too bad that's not the going price for a nice Defender. I have started looking at Discos. Prices are getting pretty amazing, and there are lots to choose from, even in the Okanagan.

Wine coloured Discovery 1 sitting at Cody Auctions in Kelowna when I drove past yesterday. I'll have to stop and do a closer inspection. I imagine it will be auctioned off this coming Saturday.

Might check it out. They had an Austin Gypsy there a few years ago.

Defender from Copley Motors

Digeridude - I believe that defender is selling out of Copley Motors in the US. They tend to carry a large selection of clean (and expensive) Rovers. What they can't sell, they auction off on ebay.

Copley is a US dealer of several different makes of used and collectables. They are also the exclusive seller of anything from East Coast Rovers.
