There are very few engineering connections between the LR3 and any Ford product, Ford did insist on a couple of things such as a Hydro-formed frame, and a secondary load path (re: frontal impacts with smaller vehicles).
Once the Land Rover engineers made it clear to Ford of the expectation in Off-road & On road performance, Ford sent them back with about 1.5 Billion US dollars to build the LR3, not a Ford Explorer.

But it does make sense that Ford would use some of LR's successful image for their more price point vehicles. Not that I want or like the Freelander but it is the best seller in it's catagory in Europe and looks better than a Honda CRV, IMHO.
