A rhythmic noise from my left front wheel area, coupled with increasing difficulty fully locking the hub on my series 3 prompted me to put it on the jack stands to check it out.
Grabbing the tire as one does to check the wheel bearing results in at least an inch of up and down play, with the entire hub moving, which does not happen on the right side.
Does this sound like hub failure or bearing failure, or both
Any suggestions greatfully accepted with thanks.

Loose....
Have you checked the tightness of the large "castle" nut under your little hub cap?
I have seen those nuts loosen and back-off if the split pin has sheared off or not been re-installed by the last installer.
On saying that, 1" is a lot of play!
Let us know what you find?
