Hi Steve
A nice trip from Chilliwack to Whistler can be done by taking the dirt road on the west side of Harrison Lake up to Pemberton and then the highway down to Whistler. There are some nice areas to camp right on the lake.There are also some hot springs along the way on the upper part of the route. The road has some pot holes and washboard areas but nothing that a Disco couldn't handel.

It is all asphalt now but a route well worth taking is the Duffy Lake Road from Whistler through to Lillooet

Camping up and down the west shore of Harrison Lake is all free. There are a couple of forest service sites that have had someone collecting fees in recent years but the status of this is currently unclear to me, perhaps someone else can advise. No permits or pre-booking is required unless you are staying at one of the BC provicial parks. Most of the sites are unofficial and un-supervised. Take a look at the photos of Hale Creek in our photo gallery. This is a very nice beach and typical of others up and down the lake. Doctor's point is another great spot to camp, its about three quarters of the way up the lake.

Zodiac Exploring
Hi Steve,
You are getting great advice on the overlander routes so I will offer a little on the exploring by boat opportunities.
Howe sound it notorious for big winds coming up quickly, they call is a "Squamish", watch the sky..
A fun bit of exploring in your Zodiac (I have a 13') would actually be Vancouver. You can launch for free by the Planetarium near Burrard Street and explore False Creek and Granville Market or head around Stanley park into the harbour or my favorite is to head across English Bay and follow the shore-line and explore all the little coves and see all the lovely homes right to Horseshoe Bay. You can tie-up at the Government dock and head up for either ice-cream or great Fish and Chips at Troll's Restaurant.

make sure you have all your permits in order if boating around the harbour, the authorities seem to be extra vigilant right now.
If you want someone to do some offroading around Chilliwack with you let me know, we live in hope which is close by, and we have 3 boys (ages 6,7 and 9) would probably be able to join you guys for a local day trip in the mountains around Chilliwack if you'd like.
