I have a couple diffs in varying states of disrepair. I would like to rebuild them but every book I have says don't bother and get a reconditioned unit.
Has anyone rebuilt a diff? And if so, what "specs" or special areas are there to be aware of? I have pulled one diff apart which took about 10 minutes and other than replacing the spyder gears I can't see what the big deal is? Any info is appreciated.

Simply put, rebuilding a rover diff is not a beginner’s job. Although, it’s quite a simple mechanical piece it still requires an understanding of how it works, proper shimming/adjusting, gear contact pattern checking and a bit of a feel to be done right.
That said, some differential repairs can still be done adequately by someone who is: mechanically minded, has a few special tools and the "green bible". I have set-up/rebuilt my own ARB, twice (see NWC 2003 report), plus my two RR project diff's, three of which were done with the help of Aart at UK Trek and Traction.
Do not just tear the thing apart! With most things mechanical, it is best to try and assess its condition, pinpoint problems and make preliminary measurements while everything is still together. Taking a few simple measurements of backlash and crown wheel run out, before disassembly, will help ensure you are at least back where you started on reassembly.
In general, if you just want to replace the four bearings ($200 - $300 last I checked) I’d say go for it. If you want to replace any gears ($1000plus?), which will require shimming, special tools and pattern checking then go to the pros to get your best value. I would recommend Aart @ UK Trek and Traction ( 604-888-2813)
