Picking up a truck from Ro Ro shipping in Tacoma?

What is it like picking up a truck that is shipped Ro Ro from the UK to Tacoma Washington? Any US paper work needed? Easy or hard? Etc...

HeadDamage,

I picked up my Forward Control in Tacoma last year along with David who had a D90 on the same ship. As long as it isn't being sold or imported in the US the paperwork is very easy.

It turned out to be quick and uneventful. The only problem is that not only did they steal everything I thought I had hidden in the truck the also have time to dismantle and remove the roof mounted spot light.

I am using a container this time.

The price from Southhampton to Tacoma was GBP 1,200.

I just paid $4,295 USD for a 40' container with two 110's in it. More basic cost and more fees/Port charges.

I think that is a wonderful thing to do for your wife!!!

As I understand it, if I bring in via RoRo Agri Canada don't get involved. Unlike using a container (as I did with my 90) where I had to disinfect the truck for 2 days before loading.

How clean did you need to get the vehicles for shipping from the UK. When I brought my 90 over in the container it took 2 days to scrub & disinfect it !

They clean them regardless, based on our experiences..... It is just a big scam. So plan for that cost regardless.

So, they clean them at the docks prior to departure or on arrival ?

On arrival. Canada customs requests the cleaning. It then gets sent to a bonded cleaning company who charged three arms and two legs and don't actually clean it.

From what I have heard, they request the cleaning regardless of condition, probably just because it is a used truck.

This is only with container shipping. RoRo, they don't apparently care....but I assume it should appear dirt free.

Your comments are a tad harsh John.

I have shipped four containers of Land Rovers over the last four years and only once did Agriculture Canada require one of the vehicles be cleaned. And yes it had to be done in Montreal by the "official" cleaner but he bend over backwards to accomodate it quickly to get it back to the terminal for it's continued journey and at a cost lower than I expected.

For RO RO I just took the Rover to the coin car wash before dropping it off in Southhampton. Because it gets unloaded in Tacoma you are literally arriving at the border and in the line up like everyone else, usually in the rain. I have never experienced or heard of a problem.

Canada Customs is very distinct from Agriculture Canada and must be dealth with separately.

I also had no problem with Agi Canada in Mtl when shipping in a container. They did ask for the certificate of cleaning to be faxed to them. This was simply a letter from the shipping company in the UK certifying they cleaned it. I had heard horror stories about Agi Canada but in my case it was fairly painless.

That is our experience bringing truck in to NS. Other ports may be better. From what you are saying Montreal sounds much better.

Customs is funny this way. Guys have had real trouble clearing vehicles in Edmonton, but it is a breeze in Calgary. I know when I had all my belongings arrive from Australia to here (Calgary), they did not even want to look at them nor my list. Stamp, stamp, have a nice day....

What was the transit time from S'hampton to Tacoma ? Just trying to work logistics out.

Have you used a vehicle shipper in BC to get a truck from the port home. Driving (maybe two) up to Revvy might not be that easy on my own. :roll:

I was thinking of renting a uhaul trailer to pick up the RR and tow with my suburban. Would use more fuel but might make the paper work side easier to manage.

Hi,

I was thinking along the same lines. It would make things alot easier & you wouldn't need to get the vehicle licenced/insured until it was ready for provincial inspection. Don't forget to get some LHD dipping headlights fitted before bringing it over.... might work out cheaper.
