Rear Corner Protectors

#1 Post by N Hamelin » Sun Dec 14, 2008 4:42 pm

A friend of mine in Alaska is currently building a real cool set of rear corner protectors that I thought the 109 or 110 crowd may find interesting. It's such a vulnerable area for damage off-road, that you can hardly find any trucks with decent corners anymore.

Definately another project to add to the list!

I'll take a set in 88 form. Mine are destroyed constantly. Might be a good idea to have a nerf bar around the outside edge as a standoff for further protection.

Yes, very nice work your friend has done there Neil. Dave is right about a nerf bar or some sort of stand-off piece adding a bit more protection. On the other hand it is very understated as it is now, especially if painted a dark colour.

I concur....

Although on a 109 rear quarter (which is considerably longer than a 110) I think the front needs to be somehow supported to the frame perhaps?

Even as it stands it would have save me from this....

Josh...don't second guess yourself...I think you have done a fabulous job. I know a few members who have gone the checkerplate route, but this still leave the rear end vulnerable. You are right in thinking that most of the impact will be at the rear near the rear crossmember, as on the same trip that I got wacked on, another 109 with the CPlate also nailed his galvanized capping. So I think really what you have done is probably the best route, given the lack of suitable support nearer the wheel.
Are you planning on painting them?

Keeps the pics coming...how bout letting us see the rest of your rig?

Stay warm :D up in Alaska!

Hi Josh,

Sweet Doormobile...! I remember seeing your trip pics. I guess Neil (?) posted them...is he the lite green rover?

My son and I every summer escape the women folk, and go north. We've done Bella Coola twice and up to the Queen Charlottes as well.

My son has always wanted to go to Alaska, so I told him when he is 16 (2 years to go) we will drive up. Our goal is to drive up and then hit the Dempster highway all the way to Inuvik.

We may do trial run up to the Yukon this coming summer (2009), and possibly get up to Alaska. If we do we should try and hook up.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Josh,
I see by your responses that you've given this a lot of thought. The forward stability issue is obviously not easily solved. I think what you have done is the best solution, just accept that this is a weak link and hope that the robust corner takes most of the hits. Understated is best anyway.

Thanks Josh,

I'll let you know when we are coming up...probably would be mid to late August.

I'd definately give you a holler if I'm coming up...we could have a Rover Gathering :D

Cheers,

Dave

Very similar to the ones you are building...intersting that they have steel folded underneath.

Can anyone update photo links on this thread? I'm trying to decide what to do with my rear corners on my 88" and unfortunately the photos are gone...

thanks, Dave B

Sorry about that Dave! I went and re-organized my Photobucket page and didn't realize that the pictures were no longer attached.
