wiper motor wiring

So, I chucked 99.9% of the horrible wiring on my truck ,(among other things.... 8) ), curious about the wiper motor. ( 1971 Series 2 sw) is it one or two speed? it has 3 wires going to it I believe. ( single wiper motor to left of steering column inside dash)

I may end up turfing it too, but I'll check if it works first.

Anyone know which wire does what?

Well, mine's a SIII, but I'd wager that if your switch is a three position, you've probably got the same two-speed wiper motor as me; slow, slow with a hint of urgency, and off.

Get a 4 way switch to allow for the unique Lucas setting of sizzle. And be careful not to let the smoke out as Lucas electrics run on smoke — If you allow the smoke to escape, the electrical device will stop working. :lol:

Sorry I don't have any more positive input. I have the two separate single speed motors in my Series IIa so I don't know how your truck with the rather advanced single-motor-running-two-wipers works.

switch was a nasty looking piece of crap I hurled into the corners of the barn...


with it's being 3 wires, it's probably 2 speed.

I'll apply some volts and see what happens.

Forgive my ignorance with the mysteries of electrical wiring........ But what is wrong with Lucas? Identification seems to be clear, circuits are basic, connections look to be robust, etc....

Re-volting the motor is certainly the way to see if it works...

well yeah,

my question was more to check if there was anything sensitive in that motor that wouldn't like having 12v applied, such as a " return to centre" control.

But from the sounds of it, ( and from the look of the motor) there'll probably be a flash of light and a bad smell, and the motor will join all the other lucas crap in my junk bin. :roll:

Ok, did a little testing, amazingly the heater fan works, so I think I'll just leave alone, were the heaters ever two speed?


As for the wipers, methinks the motors a little sick, two wires are varying degrees of dead short( one of the two is likely ground, but it's hard to tell which, the ohms are very similar)
and the other is open.

From memory, the three wires are brown, green ,and red with (I think) a green stripe.

is there an online wiring diagram of one of these I can look at? ( or if anyone has one, just let me know what's what.)

Trucks months away from actually needing wipers, but it's one of those easy little jobs I can do when I don't feel like getting too dirty.. :lol:

from the way it seems completely inert, I'll likely be having to take it apart and mess with it.

pretty sure the mechanism that joins the wipers is a touch stiff. :lol:

fitting the diesel in there is next on the list, so the wipers may get the back burner treatment for a little while here.

I'll give you a shout if I'm still too dumb to figger it out... :lol:

2 speed heaters

Hi,

My 1969 IIa has a two speed heater, but the second speed simply routes the power through a large resistor in the heater duct to drop the voltage before going through the motor. So the motor is single speed but the switch has the option of sending the power two routes.

The lower speed is really handy for when the cab gets too hot...

Yeah that's how the older toyotas do it too. big resistor on top of the fan. Simple enough I guess....
I'm delaying all electrical considerations until most of the welding is done...might end up with a painless harness or one out of a bj60. we'll see. Depends what I stumble across.
Still haven't messed with the wiper motor,other than to unbolt it and try to wiggle it loose. I suspect I'll be making a toyota wiper motor fit into that space instead ( because I have a couple, and they're 2 speed)

on the bright side, it steers now.... :lol:
