16th Annual Northwest Challenge Wrap-up

#1 Post by bclandrover » Thu Oct 14, 2004 12:01 am

The 16th Annual Northwest Challenge was a great success.

Things got started off Friday at midnight from Copper Creek with a run up to Placer Lake while searching for orienteering flags along the way. Teams were paired up in groups of two and one group of three and started rolling into camp at about 3am. Last group rolled into camp at about 5am.

Saturday events didn't get going until about 11am. After a drivers meeting and breakfast teams broke camp and headed down to a timed downhill-uphill course which, I'm told, was pretty exciting. There was a trials course and trivia question then teams were send to get gas and meet at a GPS co-ordinate by 2pm.

At about 2:30 we headed out for the Whipsaw trail. We pushed through to darkness, with only a couple recoverys and flat tires, and arrived safely at Lodestone Lake and our dinner at about 8:30pm. Snow had been falling most of the evening but it warmed up over night and mostly melted away.

Sunday started at about 9am and we headed out towards the Badger creek trail. A 5 gate trials was set-up in a muddy area with a bypass where we got more excitement than we expected. Lockers were not to be used and the last gate was a real bugger. We decended the mountains to granite city where we wrapped-up.

3rd place was awarded to Team 13, Chauncey Curl and Lou Tauber.
2nd place was awarded to Team 12, Carl Beilstein and George Beilstein.
and 1st place was awarded to Team 14, Dennis Bell and David Tauber.

The rest of the results will be posted on the NWC section of the webpage and pictures can be viewed in our photo gallery

Thanks to everyone, participants and crew, who made it possible and such a great time. I am already excited about next years Northwest Challenge hosted by the Washington crew. I thought I heard Lonn Howard say something about a place called "rim-rock" and bring spare axles!!!

Later,
