Modern Oil in older Vehicles

#1 Post by sailourboy » Tue Apr 22, 2008 10:03 am

I saw this article on my 101 site and thought I would pass it on to those operating trucks with no cats.

I was just doing my "first of the season" oil change, and thought I
might pass this along to anyone who hasn't seen it.

It refers to the lack of ZDDP additive in modern oils because of it's
reaction with catalytic converters. This is the stuff that keeps our
camshafts and tappets from wearing out. It seems that the only oil
available to us now is the diesel approved types or some racing oils
like Valvoline VR-1 20-50 which carries a full load of ZDDP. Castrol
GTX recently cut the additive in half.
