timing?

#1 Post by Rob » Wed Feb 20, 2008 5:54 pm

My experience with diesels is that if there is a good fuels supply present at the injectors the next things to check are timing and compression. Have you verified that the timing of the injection pump is correct? Do you have any reason to suspect that the timing or compression might have changed and caused the no-start problem?

I can't think of any reason why the timing or compression would have changed. I certainly didn't change anything.

The last time I drove it - about a week ago - it was kind of hard to start, but then it was hovering around zero degrees at the time so I didn't think anything of it. Once out and about that day I never had any problems getting it re-started, even after one stop where it was shut down for about three hours, so would have got nice and cold again.

Once I get the fuel filter back together I'll walk through the steps I took one more time and see if I can see anything that looks dodgy or I didn't do right the first time.

Adjusting the timing and checking the compression sounds tricky for a hobbyist like me, but I'll read up on it and maybe have a go if nothing else works.

Just a thought, if the timing of the injector pump was off, wouldn't I be getting huge amounts of unburnt fuel in the exhaust? (this question being possibly proof that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing)

Cheers, David
