The VIN marks the vehicle as a Left Hand Drive export model 1957 petrol engined basic (i.e. soft top) 88" Land Rover. It's serial number is 2708.

As the engine serial number is approaching 3,000 units beyond the chassis, it's unlikely this is the orriginal engine, but you'd have to check with the British Motor Heritage Trust (costs $70), but even then the reproduction of the factory record they sell you often has the engine number missing.

I've been told several times be different people who are all regarded as Series One gurus that the longer the production run goes on the less likely you are to get matching numbers. The reason given being that engines were regularly taken off the line to be sent as replacement units to dealers for fitting to already sold vehicles.

Hence, as time goes by, you are less likely to get a match. However, so long as your engine and chassis are in the same range (yours are) that's regarded as a good thing.

It follows that if the engine number is lower than the frame, it can never be the orriginal engine.

The only cast-iron way to say what engine your truck had when it was sold is to find the bill of sale, but I appreciate how tough that can be!
