99, P38 Starter motor.

I just had to remove the starter motor on the "oldie", and could not find a way to undo top bolt!.. Allen 8mm head, was a mistery, tried to remove the heat shield, breaking bolts, and to no avail, I did chose to feed the short extension with Torx socket on it and swivel, above the solenoid, and twisting my wrists, and fingers, made it!..Bottom bolt was no problem. Does anyone have a better way to do it?.. Seems like a job, I would wish to my enemies to do!..

Oh the dreaded upper starter bolt!....I had the same experience when having to remove the starter motor on my old Range Rover in the middle of a weekend off-road run.
I did it the same as you with a mix of socket extensions. It wasn't too bad once I had tried out a few different lengths and sizes and had the right combination. Still could only turn it a quarter turn at a time... it took forever to get it off.
Definitely some thing to prepare in advance and keep in your Land Rover. If your starter fails its very tough to "bump start" an auto and easier to keep spare starter onboard for those long trips, but you need to be able to get that upper bolt off.

Hallo AndyD, for sure it is good to keep a starter spare, but I do not see it necessary, unless you are aware that it is going!.. The starter it's self is a very nice compact but very well done!.. All turning surfaces are on needle bearings (BOSH!), I found it easy to get it cleaned up, and knowing my brushes are almost gone, I am already getting ready to buy the brush set, as otherwise brushes have to be soldered in with probably high temp. solder. The starter is really good, after cleaning even though the brushes have only 1/8 thickness left..
