The Rover-Landers of BC

So both the rear outriggers on my 109 stationwagon are rotted and whilst I was going to replace them I was looking at replacing the back shocks, bushes, etc... I'll keep the original springs are they look ok, and at the moment I can't afford parabolics.

My question is how much work (ie a shop or a buddy with a welder) do people think it will be to do the job? Is it something I can do myself? A back yard mechanic/welder quoted me 4 days labour.... Which seems excessive, no?

It sounds like he is giving you a conservative estimate based upon the work you want done, to try and keep it in line with his quote at the end of the job.

Frame repairs where the rust is bad enough to require outrigger or crossmember replacement may have more work required to repair it than initially evident. Add in the challenge of doing it with the body on or the time to pull the body and it adds up.

Shocks should be fairly simple and straightforward, but spring and chassis bushings are a notoriously time consuming job. Depending on your available tools, experience, how corroded in they are and luck in busting them free, it will be several hours to multiple days to replace the bushings.

As to whether you can (or should) do the work yourself or with a friend is hard to say without knowing your experience and equipment. Frame repairs on a roadgoing vehicle are no place for substandard work, where others may be at risk, so judge accordingly.

His time may be high to cover the realities of things going wrong on a job like this, but I would be betting at the end, his estimate will be in the ballpark.

Frame repairs? As mentioned above you don't really know until you get in to it...

I guess I was lucky with my suspension/frame bushes - they only took me 30 mins a corner to cut and drift out, but my frame has very little corrosion.
