Hi All, the steering wheel on my buddies Landi (Series II) is in good shape as in no cracks but the wheel it's self needs to be freshened up a bit (worn). What is the best way to go about this? I was thinking just a lot of rub rub with a fine scotch bright pad - thoughts?
And more importantly, the center horn push. The center bake light part is good, but the outermetal ring is all rusted. I have no idea if this outer ring should be chrome, or /painted or what so I need some advice here on just what the finish is to be, and how to achieve getting it redone.
Thanks, Pat

Re: How to refinish a steering wheel?
Hi Pat,
I've redone my landy's steering wheel and a wheel on my 60's bug.
You wanna spend some time getting all the oil and grease off. This will pay you in spaids 6 months from now when it would start to peel. Next some fine sand paper and another good clean. Lastly tape the chrome spokes and get your favourite rattle can.
On my 63 109 station wagon the steering wheel ring, horn button and Center are all black. The banjo spokes are chrome.
If you're spokes are rusty use a brass wire brush to manually scrub them... the chrome won't scratch and the rust will come off.
Sounds like a fun little project with high impact once it's done!

Re: How to refinish a steering wheel?
Pat,
You say that you have no cracks in the wheel so I'd say you are already well ahead of the game. If you had to do any crack repair then there are a number of epoxies out there that would likley work but one that has long been recommended for such things is called PC-7. I think Home Depot carry it. There used to be an instruction booklet floating around on how do go about it but I can't immediately put my hands on it. For the final finish I seem to recall that Flecto Varathane was the recommended product. For the centre cap I think you could use the same or whatever looks like it might be a match to the original finish. They were black and I think some even had a crinkle finish and you can even get that kind of paint in a spray bomb.

Thanks guys, good info. De greasing was something I did not think of, how many years of greasy paws has coated the wheel!
I have every reason to believe that the whole Landi is original, as well as the steering wheel. But the two of you who replied said the center horn push is all black, ours (pic attached) for sure is not all black. Does anyone happen to recognize this wheel as being original or not? And if it is, how should the metal part be finished? It has me a bit puzzled.
