I have stumbled across an Over drive unit for my buddies series II 109 Safari wagon
The owner has said he opened it up and it is in good shape, and it's "all there" (full kit) soI have some questions:
- Is it worth it?
- How and where does it bolt on to the gear box?
- Are there any body or drive shaft changes have to be done?
- The gear box is out, so is this a big deal to bolt on?
- How much would you suggest I offer, what is a reasonable deal for us both?
Thanks, Pat

Pat,
I'll assume that you are looking at a Fairey overdrive. These units tended to fail in use from damage due to lubrication breakdown caused by excessive heat. Depending on how they were used has a lot to do with how long they survived. I would suggest that any unit that saw significant mileage needs some level of rebuilding and component replacement. Unless "opened it up" meant that it was completely stripped for inspection by a somewone knowledgeable in these things I'd assume the worst and hope for the best if you buy it.

An overdrive is an excellent addition, assuming it’s in good shape. With the trans out, installation is merely challenging. The one to get is the Roamerdrive, made right here in West Van. It’s money but good resale value too.

Thanks, I found out it is an "FW" Kit part #811/RTC8020 if that helps :)
He wants a $1000.00 (Used), is this reasonable?
Could you kindly tell me a bit more about how it mates to the gearbox? You say "merely challenging" I'm not sure what you mean by that ;) Just where does it bolt on, and are there any body mods to be done to accommodate it?

Personally, I would not spend that much for a used overdrive especially if it is a Fairey, that you can't see in operation. A new one that is a known quality design and warranty is $2100. http://roamerdrive.com/namerica.html
Instructions to install a Fairey are here: http://www.lrfaq.org/Series/FaireyOverdriveManual.html
