Hi all,

I feel like I’ve probably asked this already but so far to no avail.

I’m really struggling to set up the diesel pump timing on my series 3. The engine has been completely rebuilt but I can’t seem to get it to run even thought there’s fuel pressure and the injectors appear to be good. I have the Haynes manual and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, nor do I really have much time to keep experimenting.

If anyone knows anything about pump timing or can put me in touch with someone that can do it I’d greatly appreciate that. I need to know if I’m timing the engine wrong or if my pump’s gone bad.

At this point I’m even willing to take it to a paid mechanic but none of the people I’ve talked to so far have been able to do it/return my calls.

(I’m located in Victoria so I don’t have the privilege of taking it the Rover shops in Vancouver)

I just want my Landy back it’s been over a year now :’(

Hi, I'm not sure what make of injection pump you have, but if it is a CAV Lucas they tend to air lock and it can be a real challenge to prime. If you crack an injector and it is not spraying diesel, just bubbling, then the injection pump is not primed.

If you have fuel at the injectors, crack injector 1 & 3 and crank the engine over with your foot on the accelerator at least half throttle to full , not more than 5 to10 seconds at a time, it should start or almost . You may have to do this a few times. Re tighten the injectors and try starting it, with your foot on the throttle, it should start.

It can take me up to half an hour to prime my Kubota tractor after changing the fuel filter, it is very frustrating.

I know the book says not to do this method but that little primer handle does not get all the air out.

Have you removed and re-installed the pump?

I don’t think there’s air in the pump as it isn’t bubbling anymore, straight jets. I think it’s the timing but as I say it was set up for me “professionally” and that didn’t work so I fiddled with it myself. Are there any indicators that the pump is buggered? I could always send for a new one.

Thanks for the original manual, I’ll give that a try.

"The engine has been professionally rebuilt" This is quite ambiguous. Was it fully and recently rebuilt? with newly rebuilt OEM/genuine injection pump and all newly rebuilt injectors? Zero old or used injection parts?

This is an old engine. Injection pump and injectors should only be about a few years old if you're troubleshooting these problems, aside from some basic timing checks.

New OEM injectors may be less nowdays than rebuilt.

The only reputable spot I could find to rebuild a 2.5 pump was Breedon & Gell in the UK. Rebuilding genuine pumps with chinese parts is a common practice it seems.

It was rebuilt by myself but the pump and injectors were set up by a friend of a friend saying he was a certified diesel mechanic. I probably will replace it all now and try again, just wanted to make sure I’m not spending the money for nothing.

I sent my pump to Action Injection in Nanaimo. Not cheap as my pump was really fubared. He used to do all our pumps when I worked for the Kubota dealer in Comox and always did good work for us. He is warranty depot for Bosch and several others. You might want to try him before replacing the entire pump. (send the injectors to). Then set up the pump on the engine as per the instructions ( to the letter) in the Land Rover repair manual.

I would certainly start with all known new or rebuilt parts, as noted earlier, that would be at least a 40 year old engine? Reliable lifespans for mechanical fuel injection systems appear shorter. I used " Breedon & Gell " in the UK for complete rebuild of my 2.5 pump using only genuine Lucas parts. It was about $1000 all in. They should be able to do yours as well. It does seem that several local shops in Alberta don't know much about timing a rebuilt pump to a land rover engine.

My best price for genuine rebuilt 2.5 injectors seemed to be from Allmakes. They wouldn't tell who they used to rebuild them though.

I recommend Action injection as well, they did a good job on our 580 case injection pump. He even told us a short cut to reinstalling the pump, it worked and saved a lot of time. Also, he sends all the old parts back that he has replaced, so you know he has done the work. He will tell you if the pump is worth rebuilding or just to get a knew one.
