The Rover-Landers of BC

I'm sure some of you have experience ordering parts from the UK. I'm wondering what kind of duty/GST we get nailed on. I'm considering ordering steering tie rods and brake drums.
On a similar note, what about ordering from BC? (I'm in Kelowna). I used to get everything from Allen at Rover Works, but he's been out of business for a while. I could also order from 3brothers. Thanks for any information anyone has. Harv

I order from lrdirect and britcar all the time. You will be charged gst, pst and 6% duty.

Thanks for the info. What about shipping times from UK? Does it take a week or two, or a month or two?

Duty is pretty hit and miss, depending on the carrier and the phase of the moon. Parts for 25+ year old cars are exempt. Sometimes it helps to have the shipper note the correct code.

As far as shipping times, that is also dependent on the carrier.

Wow, I didn't know about the duty exemption. I think my 54 year old vehicle should qualify. Thanks for that.

The one big thing to remember when you order from over seas is to make sure they ship by mail only. (Unless you are in a real hurry) If it comes via a courier you will get a call from the courier company when it arrives in Canada offering their services to serve as your broker and you will pay dearly for the privilege.

Usually 2-3 weeks by mail.

As already stated make sure the shipping company prints In nice big letters that the parts are for a 25 year old vehicle on the bill of lading.

Rocky mountain parts in Vancouver is also a very good parts source if he has the part in stock.

One more thing beware of parts in blue boxes. If you are not sure what this means you have not be reading enough Land rover forums.

Thanks Victor. I hope I got the info to the shipper in time to make it go by mail. I'm assuming blue boxes are BritPart? I've kind of discovered that on my own.

I also wanted to share another tip I found over the years. In most cases shipping to WA is cheaper than to BC, plus there is no duty there for items from UK. If you happen to travel south for other reasons you can also ship the parts there and collect them on your way. I order from LRDirect usually, plus a few other suppliers and eBayers.

LRDirect stuff comes by Royal Mail (ie Canada Post) and I normally receive the delivery within 3 DAYS of despatch. Usually leaves the UK the day after I order and comes straight to Vancouver, out to Canada Post in Richmond and gets delivered the next day.

eBay stuff takes weeks, even when sent via RM International Priority at the moment. I've had 2 things refunded this year so far (I give them 4-6 weeks from order if advertised as being sent International Priority, which should be 2 weeks), only for the delivery to turn up a few weeks later with a snail-speed parcel sticker on the box. But that's the seller's fault for not actually sending items via the speed of service they have charged you for....

I haven't been charged any GST/PST for anything that arrives via Canada Post from ANYWHERE in the last 3 years.

Avoid sellers who use other carriers, because most of them use the collection of taxes as a profit stream (via the exorbitant handling charges).
