Hi Greenbank,
Welcome to the forum.

If your lucky its just trapped air that needs bleeding out from the heater (from the last coolant change that wasn,t done right).

-Do you have any warm air at all (on the windsheild)?
-Does the blower fan work on all speeds?
-Lift the carpet under the heater area & check for any dampness under neath.
- Does your temp gauge work normally?

Disco Heater...

Hi again Greenbank,
It seems like the first thing you should try is bleeding any air out that may be stuck in the heater. I asked a friend who has a Disco how he bleeds the coolant system & this is how he does it;

"The simplest method is to remove the radiator cap, place a 6 inch funnel firmly in the hole, fill it with coolant mixture, and let the engine idle, on the level. When the thermostat opens, the air will generally flow up the top hose, and the system level will suddenly drop a few inches. Top it off (engine still running), and close up the cap."

Worth a try before you go digging any deeper.

He also suggested that you could try to get the "check engine" light out by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes then reconnecting. If the light stays out after reconnecting, all is well. If it stays on its for a reason, so more investigation is required

Good luck & let us know how you get on,
cheers,
Andy

Hi Greenbank

The manual shows a mixing valve just before the heater hose passes through the fire wall. I checked my 97 Disco & no mixing valve!!

I check under the dash & removed the glove box this morning to look for a mixing valve but did not see one.

When you have the glove box out you can see if the cable that controles the temp is off. With two zones their is two sets off controles. L/H & R/H you will only see the R/H

:( Note: I would lean to a blocked line or air trapped!! :(

The heater matrix under the dash is divider into two zones each side controles the amount of heat {water} per side. I would have the system reverse flushed before taking any more apart!! Without a breakdown of the matrix unit.

Rad flushed at The Great Canadian Oil Change $60.00 Plus enviro fee $5.
Open & close valves to dislodge any sediment.
Don't leave till you have heat!

Good Luck!

Stuart

Check engine light...

Hi Greenbank,
Good to hear your heater is working again, lets hope it stays that way!

I believe that you have two warning lights, 1. Check engine light. 2. Service Engine light. Here is some info on both.

Check Engine Light
On the 4.0/4.6, the Check Engine light acts as the "MIL" (Malfunction Indicator Light) mandated under the OBD-II standard, to signal that a fault has been detected in the engine management/electronic fuel injection system. The most likely cause is the need to replace an oxygen sensor, but other fairly likely ones include the throttle positionn sensor and various other sensors. To discover what the fault is, and reset the light, you need to access the engine ECU using a scan tool such as the dealer's Testbook or an OBD-II compatible analyzer. Inexpensive versions of the latter can now be obtained for under $200. See the scan tool section for details of all these tools.

Unfortunately theGEMS models (1995-98 ) have non-volatile memories so the condition cannot be reset by disconnecting the battery.

Service Engine Light
This light merelyy signals that the vehicle has done 82,500 miles (or a multiple thereof) and an emissions-related service is due. I had previously assumed this could be reset with a standard OBD-II scanner. However Andy Anderson recently informed me that he tried to do so on his 1996 4.0 SE using an Auto X-Ray EX Scan 1000, and found it would not do it. This was confirmed by a call to Auto X-Ray.

Good luck.

If you're not able to figure things out... then give Keith a call... he knows his stuff and has very reasonable rates.
