OK so I'm having an issue where I can only drive my 110 with the diff lock engaged.

When I shift the transfer case to open diff lock I can feel it engage but when I step on the gas.... nothing just revs the engine.

I was thinking maybe I broke an axle because gear oil was leaking pretty heavy from the rear left hub but I eliminated that possibility.

I checked all the linkages and everything external looks good. I have not opened up the tcase but it does "feel" like it engages....

OK so pick a part in Chilliwack has a 1995 Range Rover and a 1998 Disco... Now got to find out if the transfer case is compatible...

Are the front cv shafts from other models compatible with defenders? Maybe I should pick up some trail spares


I've got a 1992 110

The Range rover will have a Borg Warner T-case, stay away from that! The Disco would have a LT230 I belive which is what you want, but it has the higher gearing.

If it only drives with the diff lock engaged then your LT230 is likely not the problem. Look at the axles, diffs, etc....

When in gear with the diff lock open have someone look under and see if a driveshaft is turning. That will point to your broken axle.

You guys are right. I didn't have a spare set of eyes so I put my phone under the truck with the camera rolling. Front shaft is spinning so it's something up front.... no noise or trouble cornering just a consistent screeching grinding noise while driving... I'm guessing that means the ten spline end went on one of my halfshafts.

I tried jacking up the wheels one at a time and turning them, and there is a faint noise on the left side. Also both brakes are dragging (that would explain the recent drop in fuel economy... lol)

Remove the diff fill plug. Jack up and spin each wheel. You can see well enough through the fill plug to see which side is broken. Then pull that side apart.

I took Red's advice, it appears something is busted on the short side cuz the diff gears turn fine when I spin the left wheel but nothing when I turn the right.

Bugger... Jeremy just brought in a set of shafts and the short side is already spoken for.... just my luck lol

Probably best to replace both shafts anyway. Get in two sets, if you go off road, as you should carry spares. You will probably end up needing to pull both sides and the diff as usually the 10 spline shafts break at the end of the splines and the little piece of axle gets stuck in the diff. Hopefully not, but that seems to be the normal failure on these.
