Alternator /Tach Help

So I've decided to tackle installing a VOD Tach on my 300tdi......

From what I've read, I'm suppose to run a wire from the W terminal to the tach.....but my 75 W Bosch Alternator (p/n 01 242 250 38) does not have a W terminal. I have a B1 where the main lead connects to. (left side of picture 9 o'clock position). Then I have a B2+ (3 o'clock position) and then directly above it a small connector with a thin yellow/black wire to it.

I've even take the cover off but didn't see anything.

Can anyone help? I've spent couple hours on google but havent come across anything helpful.

Thanks

I'm not familiar with that style of alternator but from the photo it does not look like it has a tach terminal.

It will be hard to explain through the Internet but we can try. You need to take the cover off and get into the internals to find a good spot to add a lead.

Basically you want to find the large wires coming from the stator windings. There will be three of them 120 degrees apart. The tach needs to connect to one of those wires.

If you pull the cover and take some good photos I might be able to help direct you.

How is your Portuguese?

In depth thread on that alternator here: http://www.4x4brasil.com.br/forum/land- ... der-7.html Here is it translated. https://translate.google.ca/translate?h ... der-7.html

In post 75, he has circled three wires which they say you need to solder a lead to one of those for the tach signal. Clear as mud?

Hi Red....I'm impressed and slightly embarrassed.

I purchased the truck and NEW Bosch alternator in Brazil back in 2011....never crossed my mind to check Brazilian forums. Very impressed that you found that thread...and yes I can read Portuguese.

I took my cover off again and found the three spots he had circled in red....

Q: Would soldering a 14 gauge automotive wire suffice? or should it be thicker? Would you solder a short wire with a female recepticle and then connect to it?

Do you have any experience in doing this on another alternator? Does it work? The Brazilian guy said it worked very well for him / accurate.

Thanks again!

It can be a light gauge wire. There is no current. The tach is just pulse counting. Yes. I would suggest a short lead with a connector. Yes. I've wired in tach signal wires in the past.

You will need to adjust the tach. The best way is to get a laser tach. I see they are on sale at princess auto at the moment. http://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/d ... -p8500647e

Perfect thanks.

I'll post on how the whole thing turns out.

I'm also wiring in a digital EGT gauge at the same time....so far, no issues with that installation.

,,,now that I have the whole instrument cluster apart...I've been wondering if I should just replace all the gauges...so tempting.

PS: If/when replacing a Speedometer...stupid question...can the odometer be set to show the current mileage on the truck by a shop?

Once you get one VDO gauge in there you will have to replace them all. You can run the new speedo up by hooking up an AC signal and waiting long enough. A specialty shop can probably program it but I suspect it will cost more than the gauge. If you do go with a VDO speedo use the Defender style Hall effect sender and not the Discovery reed switch one.

So after messaging red90 and realizing it would be much less work to install more gauges now...I decided to pick up a couple more.

So this is what is going in: VDO Vision Black

- 310-108 - 120c Water Temp Gauge along with 323-095 Temperature Sender 1/8 -27NPT
- 301-105 - Fuel Gauge
- 333-158 - 6K Tach
- EGT Digital Gauge PMD1XT Pyrometer + Probe Kit from The Sensor Connection.

I'll be placing the tach beside the Speedo and moving everything over one + removing the clock.

The EGT will be mounted onto of the dash directly in front of the driver/ steering wheel.

I'll post pictures once I'm done...which of course always takes longer than expected due to work/kids/spouse/life and countless drives to local parts store.

Fun times...

Then I can start tuning the fuel pump to ensure I get the most of the new extra sized Allisport Intercooler (This is how it all started)...

As promised...

Decided to put in the 4k Tach instead of 6k...realized the old truck doesn't like to get close to 4k.

noticed at 100kph it's at 2800 rpm...is this normal range?

Now just need to find s/one to weld the probe bud to the turbo EGR plate for an actual reading...just showing temp inside engine bay at moment :D

Thanks a bunch to Red90 for walking me through a couple of questions...and advice.

More than likely, I will bite the bullet and but the MUD UK Pod and move my three other gauges (oil temp, turbo and oil pressure) along with the digital temp reader currently mounted in front of steering wheel.

New VDO speedo might be next...just because the VDO's look super clean and easy to read.

2800 is high if it is a stock 300tdi.

http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk ... _calc.html

Is it stock or a conversion?

stock...

where do I find the variant models for the gearbox and transfer case?

I know I have a R380 and LT230..no overdrive.

Double core intercooler and 265/75/16

I'll get the GPS out tomorrow ..maybe it was 2600 rpm...but indicated 100kpm.

Find the serial numbers on the boxes. You need the first two numbers and the last letter.

From my calcs, with a stock 300TDI drivetrain on 265/75/16, you should be 2580 rpm at 100 km/h in 5th gear.
