Hello again from Brisbane.

When I read your note I hadn't associated you with the Grizzly Torque restoration project featured in a recent issue of Classic Land Rover or on another thread over in the restoration section.

Congratulations on a genuinely impressive project and especially working with a vehicle of considerable local and international significance.

There are some genuinely impressive restorations of the early Series 1 trucks here in Oz, but not a lot of them have any great heritage claim to fame beyond, perhaps, being the first to be imported or so on. There will be a few lying around, or still on the road, that may have made the trip from London to Australia via Singapore and subsequently sold but none is particularly famous along the lines of the Oxford and Cambridge trucks of 'First Overland' fame or your own GT.

Two exceptions to that observation might be these - the first vehicle to traverse Australia from west to east across the greatest distance (Steep Point WA to Cape Byron in NSW) and the sole survivor of the fleet of Royal Review Rovers that was commissioned for the 1954 Royal Tour.

You (and other members) might be interested in them.

The first crossing was completed by Mike and Mal Leyland in 1966 driving an old 107" S1 wagon and an ex-Army S2 88" towing a four wheeled trailer. This was subject to a film (Wheels Across the Wilderness) which I went to see with my Dad at the local cinema when I was still a kid in school. Probably more than anything else, beyond driving them on the farm, this fired me up to wanting to own a Land Rover and go see the world. The Leyland Brothers went on to become quite famous here with a number of 'outback' adventure shows on TV which in hindsight were pretty corny but in the day were widely watched.

The 107" wagon, although a little worse for wear, is on display at the National Automobile Museum in Birdwood near Adelaide. Some photos can be seen on this site:

The Royal Review Rover has been restored from a total wreck to original condition by one of the local club members here in southern Queensland (SLOW - Series Landy Owners) and was featured in an issue of Land Rover Owners International earlier this year. Incidentally, Arthur Goddard who was the chief engineer for the design of the original Land Rover is still alive in his 90's and living here in Brisbane having emigrated some years ago. He is the Patron of the SLOW club and is still pretty spritely and a wealth of technical and historical information about leaf sprung Land Rovers.

Been a bit quiet on the Rover spotting front over the recent break - however, I was over in Bali and Lombok (Indonesia) for a couple of weeks in December and there are always a few about.

Hard to know where these vehicles come from (often ex-military or from aid projects), but this one has a grille that was unique to later model Australian built Series 2A trucks. However, the wagons came fully imported from the UK and typically had the standard UK-global grille.
