belt help

Newby issue here.
Just replacing my Lucus alternator w/ a Whatcom Electric (Bellingham,WA) built MG version w/ output closer to 90A for lighting etc. Replacement alternator pulley is similar depth but smaller diameter so the 10mm-1050 belt is still too loose when alternator body is pivoted to "full out" position. So... short of ordering 3 different guestimate replacement belt lengths, any tricks to measure for new best belt length? Any favorite sources? Thanks everybody.

Kyle

What vehicle and engine?

The belts are sized on the length and normally there should be a code on them that tell you the size. Easiest is to take it to an auto parts store and have them grab the next size down.

I've done this a couple of ways on v-belt drives, one is to use an emergency belt kit (something like this http://www.bellautomotive.com/Emergency ... 320-vs.htm ) and use it to measure the belt size (plus then have an emergency spare ready to go in the spares kit) or alternately just use an old belt that is too large, cut it and shorten it until it fits then use that as a sample at the autoparts store. Other tricks I have heard of are using a suitable diameter rope or hose to measure the correct length.

Hope this is helpful.

I had a look at my series 3 lightweight. The belt is an AVX 10 1050 mm belt according to the markings. AVX wedge shape, 10 mm wide, 1050 mm long. Other manufacturers use 11A as the size and length in inches.

Gates 6222MC
http://www.gatesautocat.com/article/6222MC They go down 25 mm at a time. Same as Dayco 15415 (41.5" long).

10x1025: http://www.gatesautocat.com/article/6221MC (size on my 90 with a 200TDI). Dayco 15405
10x1000: http://www.gatesautocat.com/article/6220MC
and so on...

The lightweight uses dual belts, which I think is a military thing and probably good for a large alternator.

Anyway, look for markings to see what you have or try and measure. Canadian Tire should work...

These last two posts made the difference. Should be enough to source just what I need. The forum saves it again.
