Weird Warm Idle and EP80 Questions

#1 Post by donno » Thu Apr 16, 2015 4:13 pm

This is on my 91 RRC

Question 1 - Rough idle at stop light. Driving fine through town, RRC is warmed up, come to a stop sign/light and runs fine right up until I am completely stopped. Once I'm stopped it seems to surge from 800ish RPM to 0 RPM (almost/sometimes stalls) up and down 8 or 10 times, then if it hasn't stalled it levels out again and idles normally. I have cleaned the IAC already. I have RoverGauge connected and noticed the Idle Bypass position does get down to 0% which I thought it shouldn't get that low.

Is this a common symptom of anything in particular or should I just start troubleshooting the usual?

Question 2 - Swivel balls are leaking a bit. Plan on changing the seals but in the meantime, can I top up with EP90 even though I believe the previous owner did use the one shot grease. Can they be mixed? Had a look at my local parts store and didn't see any with the specific rating. Can anyone recommend a brand to ask for? Is EP80 the only weight I should use?

Thanks! Loving the RRC!

Check that you are getting a vehicle speed signal with the rover gauge. When that does you get that sort of idle problem.

Oil with the grease should be fine.

Thanks Red90. I don't see a specific check for that signal. Can I assume that if the gauge registers mph then the ECU is getting a signal?

Check this site out..........(if you haven't already)

Rough Idle & stalling when coming to a stop

Keep in mind, if you already have weeping swivel ball seals with the One-Shot Grease they will leak a lot more if they have oil in there.
I would keep using the grease until you change the seals, then switch to the oil (if you choose to). best to clean all the old grease out before putting the oil in.

I think those age RRs use a mechanical speedo but not positive. The speed signal comes from an inline box. Or do you mean the gauge on the Rovergauge?

You can check it manually. There is a troubleshooting guide in the workshop manual.

Have you checked the idle control stepper motor or is that the IAC?

I had a similar problem when I had the V8, turned out to be the ignition module. Not sure if that is your issue, but worth a check to see if it is getting too warm. There was a recall to relocate the module from the distributor to the inner fender well to get it away from the heat. I went through 3 in less than a year! The 4th time it went, it was diesel time!
