This is the view from my front axle looking up and back. Am I missing a piece of metal, or is this big hole supposed to be here?

Looks like you are missing the mudshield that covers the heater. The shield is flat sheet of metal that attaches to the inside of the top fender (to the bracket as can be seen in your picture) and then attaches to the footwell.
